When i was little my Mum would knit whilst watching the TV and produce allsorts for me ( multi tasking - i love it ! ).
I can knit and could probably work out how to pearl again , but i can't cast on and off and increase/decrease stitches .
Has anyone found a good book that teaches how to knit ?

try
here. It has pictures too. I love knitting - stops me eating. I like simple things though, I did a knitted cover for my daughter and have done lots of scarves etc. I'm doing baby cardigans for a charity that gives them to premature baby units at the moment. Good luck and have fun!
oh i would love to be able to knit , my nan used to knit jumpers for me when i was small , she is still doing them now for my youngest cousin 'tara' who is 4
I've got several things on the go at the moment, but I keep losing the patterns

;-) That's why I have so many things started. I also get bored very quickly, or is it that I just have too many things on the go and never find the time to get started again ;-) Must pick up the needles and get these things finished.

I used to knit aran cardies and things for folk helped pay the coal bill - man do I sound really old now lol.
My girls went to school with home knitted jumpers, dresses and cardies all their baby clothes were knitted by moi too, am lucky coz I don't need to keep the pattern once I've repeated it a couple of times I know it and can work out what stitches are there in a row but if I lose the pattern before I've got to that stage its a no brainer somehow lol
Yep I can but I cant now as my hands are too bad (arthritis) I made my sons jumpers until they started moaning that they itched. Arans, fairisle all baby clothes. Made Ben about 20 before he was born he weighed in at 10lb 9oz and none fitted!!! So I gave them all away. All new babies get a specially crochet shawl with a different pattern, I still have my two put away for grandchildren.
Last things I did was from kits at Hobbycraft I made twop handbags for my Great nieces, my Mum taught me at about 4 years old to keep me out of the way as she had my brothers age 2 and 6 months at the time.. Humm I wonder if I still can???

Whistler, I to have arthritis in my hands and I find knitting helps to keep them supple, I do sometimes have to lift and lay the knitting due to my fingers going numb, but knit a lot especially for the grandchildren/gt grandchildren, just finished one today for the baby so now going to do hat mitts and bootees to match. I could buy and sell patterns think I have more than some of the shops LOL !!! All my patterns are in books like they have in the shops, makes it easier to pick out a pattern in the plastic cover. I recently got some patterns from freecycle as well.
knitting also stops me biting my nails which is a horrrible habit ive had shince childhood. LOL !!!!

knitting is the new black :)
i am semi teaching myself as my gran used to knit and my mum is a very accomplished knitter- she knitted my newest nephew the most stunning shawl.
coming on slowly though...
> Yep I can but I cant now as my hands are too bad (arthritis)
my gran switched to bamboo needles when her arthritis started to get bad as they are light-might help?

They 'taught' us to knit in Junior school but I never even managed a string dish-cloth (anyone else remember them) but tried again when the kids were small and did stuff for them, Well chuffed with myself at the time as I even managed a cable jacket with a pocket :-D. Have not done any for years as the kids got too big but think I could still remember how - bit like riding a bike!!!

You probably can.
Gran taught me to knit when i was very young then a couple of years ago i got rid of the yarn and needles knocking about when i went to a book group get together, somehow i came home with more yarn and needles and started knitting again - probably about 20 minutes later.
Since then i have progressed from scarves and hats to knitting other things, including some ear warmers for a friends dog.
Current addiction is sock knitting, once you've lost the fear of dpn's (or have worked out how to magic loop if you use circs) your away. it also means that there is a small portable project in my bag wherever i go.
if you want patterns/ideas/to talk to other knitters (and crocheters) try www.ravelry.com

Not 'It girls'.... But
'Knit girls'! :-D
I'd like to learn, I like that rythmic clickety click of someone knitting..always seems very therapeutic.

it is, its quite soothing (till you drop a stitch, then its awful!)
I took up Kumihimo (chinese braids) with a muradi and I make jewellry with murano glass and beads. Ive got about 50 pieces made now. My trouble is my knuckles are becoming dislocated and dogs like the "cotton reel" bits I use. But I may try again but I have little to no grip.
> I took up Kumihimo
I had to search engine that! I'de never heard of it but it sounded interesting and it is!
Kumi-whatsitBut you'll have to explain what it all means!! Im intruiged now.
(Can I do this with nylon.... I suspose what I'm getting at is wondering if I can 'cutom' parts of the gang-lines for the dogs (Rig/scooter))
Amazing the different thing you leanr here :)

I can knit. I used to knit for the children when they were small and also used to sew their clothes as well.
I also used to knit jumpers for Save the Children and Oxfam but haven't knitted anything for a few years now. I used to knit whilst watching TV or reading a book and found it quite relaxing :-)

I would love to be able to knit. My Nan tried to teach me when I was expecting my eldest as I wanted to knit a pair of booties. It didn't ever happen though! :-D
I can cast on and do a straight knit, but the tension is all wrong and I end up with very squiffy knitting. Sometimes the knit got so tight I couldn't put the needle in to do the next stitch. I gave up in the end.

I could just about knit a scarf...thats all.
>(till you drop a stitch, then its awful!)
I actually enjoy picking up the dropped stitches, unless I'm doing an arran or a strong pattern ;-) Must be weird...... I taught all my kids to knit (yes, even my son

) but the one thing they all agreed on was that I had to pick up the dropped stitches :-D

Ahhh..... a girl after my own heart, I've knitted so many scarves, as long as it is straight I'm fine. :-D I remember once at school I knitted a teddy bear, no idea how I did it! A friend of mine used to knit these beautiful elaborate jumpers, I used to wish I could do it, but I got some nice Christmas presents from her, (and she got my shop bought ones, well, unless she wanted a scarf.) :-D

Love it to bits. Started knitting after many years of not, after my partner died. I too have pain problems and hoping that wont get worse. Hoping knitting might help by keeping fingers moving. For christmas I knitted a little waiscoat for my 2 1/2" year old grandaughter. Its a lovely rich cranberry colour with funky fur all around the neck and down the front and round the sleeves. she wears it over a white polo neck for "best". Everyone wants to know where she got it from. Its absolutely gorgeous. I am so chuffed.

I used to knit all the time. Made loads of baby items over the years.
My OH's Grand mother was bed ridden and his family looked after her for years.Whilst snuggled up on her big bed She taught him to knit and darn. He taught my niece..
Yes you can buy an hand muradi as well and can use string, plastic, leather. The last time I got mine out my OH let the dogs in the lounge silk threads and beads everywhere. Im all prepared now to do some more tonight. Jaqui Carey wrote some great books on Amazon and it really easy (has to be for me!). I warn you its adictive so any dog charity want some braids tell me where and I'll send some for you to sell and keep the money!!!
They come out so lovely and match the beads and glass and my niece and son's OH wear a lot of mine, so do I!!
Yes a bit like it look at Jaqui Careys web site and the link above I got my cousin a carpenter to make my muradi but you can get a perspec one. Or a hand kit its just good fun I use a hand one on long flights I could not do my cross stitch as they pinched my nail scissors. It just takes your mind off the drivel on the tv.

Yes I can knit but haven't done so for years now. I used to do arran and fairisle too but just got out of doing it.
There used to be lots of shops that sold kintting supplies but I think they are few and far between now.

You,ve given me an idea now to stop me nibbling of a nightime whilst watching telly.
I,ll go and rake out my knitting needles and make a scarf or two.
I,m getting bored with the colouring book now and half a stone has crept back on.
