Topic Other Boards / Foo / Killers concert dilemma!
- By Sam-Jo [gb] Date 03.03.09 15:56 UTC
So, I was supposed to be going to see the Killers at the weekend with my OH.  He's just been called away to work, but we always had a back up that my daughter would come instead.  Just rang up to check on any age restrictions and you have to be 14 :-(, my daughter is a tall 12 year old.  I could be naughty and get a copy of a friends 14 year olds birth certificate, in case we have to show proof, but what do you think?
Anyones children been to a concert recently and had to show proof of age?  And what sort of proof?  Or do I just try and sell them on E bay?
I don't know what to do!

i used to work part time in the carling academy, fantastic to see gigs free.
i very very much doubt she will be asked for i.d if she is with a guardian. which venue is it?
the rules are generally there for young children being dropped off and unsupervised.

It's at Metro Arena Newcastle.  I asked if there was any age restrictions, then they asked what tickets we had, I said standing, then they said 14.  Then I rang back and asked if it would be likely to be asked for proof of age and she said 'yes'!  She could easily pass for 14, but I'll be worried until Saturday!  Then I think the worst thing that could happen is we won't be let in, bad but what the heck!  Just spoke to my friend and her daughter isn't 14 until the end of the month, but she has a 16 year old daughter! Hmmmm, not sure if she'd pass for 16!

Is the age restriction for the venue or the concert ?. Must be a reason why it isn't suitable for under 14's. Not knowing much about the Killers - maybe it just isn't suitable for children.

I think the age limit may only be on the standing tickets due to how "excited" some people get, so the venue would obviously not want anyone who could easily get injured.

the killers are a indie rock type band. quite harmless as they are mainstream. the rules are for licensing laws as there will be a bar in the venue, and also for health and safety, they assume a youngster under 14 is more likely to be at risk of being hurt within the venue.
these are just the regulations that we used to have at the academy.
i cant myself quite workout why over 14 are allowed in without supervision as these are more likely to try their luck in the bar.

Yes, the 14 does appear to be just for the standing.  I'm sure we can find a quiet area and I'll be ready to protect her from any over excited fans!  My daughter has just came in, and I told her about the age.  She just said "I'm 14!  I'll wear my skinny jeans, Ugg boots, lots of make up and a padded bra, we'll be fine!"
Think I might risk it :-)
If any one has any children that have been asked for ID at a concert, please let me know.

I went to the Killers last night - great, amazing gig you'll love it, Brandon Flowers is so hot! :) sorry off topic! but I can assure you no bad language was used by any members of the band & there wasn't too much pushing & pulling on the standing floor, lots of arm swinging, clapping & singing though. I was seated but quite close to the floor & I could see plenty of children there with their parents. I go to lots of gigs & have only seen ID requested when the musical content could be a bit offensive or it's a particularly busy, crowd surfing type of band & that's just for their safety.  With regards attempting to get served, even if you've been allowed into the gig doesn't mean you're old enough to drink & I've seen many, many people asked for ID at the bar.

You will have a great night, my throat is sore from singing so loudly (feel sorry for the couple sat next to us!) & my hands are raw for clapping but it was an amazing gig, I'd go every night if I could get tickets & afford it!!

Let us know what you think :)

I doubt you will be asked if she is with an adult. It is just because its standing, we've had the same at various concert venues and under 14 is OK for seated area but not standing. If she can pass for 14 (and most 12 year olds can nowadays ) it should be fine, but get her to rehearse her DOB as a 14 year old just in case!!!!! My daughter has been at T in the park with her older sister and friends since she was 13 and has never been questioned, even though you are supposed to be accompanied by someone over 21 if you are under 16 (her sister and friends were 18)

I would take her and risk it too.....take a copy of your friends borrowed id too just in case......one tip though learn everything on it by heart just incase they decide to try to trip you up.
This might be a bit norty but id do the same if it was the difference between getting to see a band I like or missing out.....epecially if they dont come to this country often.

Ive been to Newcastle Metro  and Newcastle Carling many times and never seen anyone asked for id yet so you should be ok.

I hope you have a great time and your daughter too
lat us know how it goes

The Killers were fantastic.  My daughter loved it, even though we were in the thick of it about 10 feet from the stage! Brilliant atmosphere, haven't been to a concert for over 20 years!  My daughter wasn't asked her age and I did see acouple of kids standing, that looked about 10.
Anyway, obviously really pleased we went and thanks all who encouraged us to go for it.
