I am getting another Cavalier off a friend but she is having problems weaning them.  I am suppose to be bringing my dog home in 18 days and i intend to put her on Arden grange at the moment my friend is trying to get the pups on to Eukanuba but even when soaked they dont seem interested in it.  They are happy to eat baby rice with goats milk and the eukanuba mixed with wet Jwb puppy food but the Eukanuba on its own they wont entertain.  The bitch had 6 pups and they are all very large while the bitch is quite small so my friend would like to stop the bitch nursing the pups as her nipples look quite sore not suprising considering all those puppys teeth.  Apparently the pups also helped themselves to some raw chicken mince the other day which they enjoyed but my friend would like the pups weaned on to something she can give people so they dont swop the pups food as soon as they take it home. Any ideas?  I have a bag Arden grange weaning food will this just add to the confusion?

Tell your friend to give them raw red meat ( previously frozen to kill off neopora), minced finely and watch them

..have your hand off :-)

She can then introduce the soaked complete gradually to the meat.

Cavalier puppies cling to the breast for as long as possible and it takes something yummy to persuade them otherwise.

I usually soak the puppy food with  Lactol milk until its quite soft and a bit runny then gradually less milk , but agree with the raw mince too rolled into tiny balls.

i had problems weening my last litter ,i also asked on here and told to try tiny balls of mince and the pups loved it so after a few meals of this i soaked their dry food with whelpi added some balls and that was that :)

Has she tried feeding it to each one off a spoon ? This is time consuming but it might just do the trick.

I wean all my pups onto raw, and the new owners don't have problems with it. They want the best for their new pup
and realise when educated, it's the best way to rear a puppy and feed a fully grown dog. I also don't freeze it all, they get unfrozen raw meat as well as meat that has been frozen. They never refuse food. I don't blame them for not wanting to eat rubbishy processed food, no wonder they grabbed the chicken mince. :)
