Hey guys,

Just a quick whip round to see who you all use for insurance that covers whelping etc....only one I can find information on is the KC scheme...any others?

Kelly :)

I got a quote for it, decided it was too expensive and should have taken it as ended up with a large vets bill

Ah man that sucks...bloody typical eh.

Hope all concerned were ok though?

All Ok now.
Mum ended up with an unneccesary caesarian to find no puppy inside.
She had had two puppies naturally- sadly one died at two days and the other is fat and flourishing- With hindsight I should have taken it but it was my first litter and between stud fee and whelping equipment I had spent over a thousand pound and decided I couldn't afford to - gulp!
At least Mum and puppy are safe.
It makes me laugh how people think we make money from breeding dogs...

Yes absolutely agree! It's hard going.

Really sorry to hear about that, but glad mum and pup are doing well :)

My girl HAD to have a c section and i was in bits in the vets, its terrible that you had to go through that so unecessarily. My babies are doing well, and mum has loads of milk.

I followed your thread Mike and was worried about your girl-being new to breeding I did not feel I could add anything useful but I had my fingers crossed for you

hi ann did your vet ever refund or even apologise for the unneccassary c section he put your bitch through? how did it all end up?
- By ANNM172 [gb] Date 04.03.09 17:21 UTC
I was given 10% off yeaterday at Mischa's check up and some Whelpi to give her which has meant she has had severe diarrhoea and vomitting today- Time for a new vet I feel
- By mahonc Date 04.03.09 17:23 UTC
yeh i think so too. i dont think 10% off an operation that wasnt needed it satisfactory. i would make a formal complaint too aswel.
hope "fatty" is doing well!

She is over a pond now - was five and a half ounces at birth almost two weeks ago - Now called Gem.
She has been fab- crying a bit tonight - I assume mum is dehydrated after diarrhoea and so may have less milk.
I am trying not to intervene as I thought suckling might encourage the milk back - Is that the right thing to do?

Meant pound!

personally i would encourage mum to have as much liquids as possible, in anyway that you can soak her kibble for example and let pup suckle as usual. you could always encourage her on to one of the back teats which generally have more milk in. was there any reason mum had a funny tummy?
- By ANNM172 [gb] Date 04.03.09 17:40 UTC
Vet gave me whelpi at yesterday's check up - said good for a bitch with pups.
On his advice I gave her it and today have watched it squirt from every available orrifice until her tummy is empty.
She is taking water but only from my fingers - won't touch bowl for some reason and has in the last twenty minutes picked at a couple of bits of kibble.
I feel very guilty as she was fine without the whelpi and I should have trusted my instincts

It's not the end of the world and will dry up but unneccesary again
- By mahonc Date 04.03.09 17:43 UTC
if you think its the whelpi that eliminates bugs which is good. soak her kibble and see how she goes for tonight, hopefully she will start drinking and eating again soon, the fact shes picking at kibble at least is a good sign. lets face it nobody likes having the runs.

Will try her with soaked now- Thanks
