Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Discharge after mating
- By JanW [fr] Date 01.03.09 11:20 UTC
Hi everyone, my bitch was mated on Wednesday using AI, today I have noticed she has a creamy white/slightly green discharge (no smell).  I've been searching the internet for clues and the only thing I found was that sometimes this kind of discharge is good news but usually after two weeks after the mating - it's only been 4 days - could this be the start of an infection?  We will be seeing the vet first thing tomorrow morning but wondered if anyone has any advice.  Many thanks

I would imagine AI carries a raised risk of infection, I believe prophilactic antibiotics are generally given.  If they were not I would see the vet.

hi janw, my bitch also had a discharge like this very early on in pregnancy, and i at first thought it was an infection but the vets told me it was nothing to worry about. I know they sometimes get a discharge later on, but my bitch only had this greeny mucous discharge from about 5 days in for about a week, and that was the only discharge she had throughout the whole of the pregnancy.
But i would probably have the vet check her out as i did, just in case, x

Appologies for misspelling prophylactic :-)

Many thanks for your help, the vet has said it's nothing to worry about but to keep an eye on any discharge especially if it changes colour or starts to smell!!  She did have a jab to cover infections at the time of the AI so hopefully it's just one of those things.
