Just sold an item and the people are coming to pick it up tomorrow.  How do you get the money?  It says that the person purchasing has to leave positive feedback, or after 21 days of payment.  Can someone whose paid get their money back without you knowing?  Just worried as never done this before and don't know how it works.

how are they paying? is it by paypal? ive never sold anthing on ebay, but ive bought quite a few things and i always pay straight away with paypal. the money is taken out of my account immediately, and to my knowledge i cant take it back once paid.
feedback is left by both parties once item has passed hands.
- By welshlassy [gb] Date 28.02.09 22:53 UTC
I would ask for cash on collection, that way you don't get paypal fees and you don't have to wait to transfer the money into your bank etc

Is the feedback not a bit like a reference you give on the person doing the buying and the person doing the selling. As to how well the delivery and payment went. Never used ebay but have a look sometimes and think thats what they mean by feedback

yes it is. the person buying leaves feedback on the seller and the item, was the item as described, was p&p reasonable, how long was delivery etc etc. the seller leaves feedback and usually rates the time for payment to be given and references to any communication that went on between the two parties.

Yeah done through Paypal.  So hopefully all should be fine then?
- By suz1985 [gb] Date 28.02.09 23:13 UTC
it should be as far as i know. as i said, ive never actually sold anything, but certainly when i pay it is immediate and my reciept email comes straight away, have you recieved notification from ebay that theyve paid? im assuming it must go into your account pretty quickly. go into your "my ebay" page and check the status on the sale.

Bit late now but it's best NOT to take Paypal payments for collection items.  Paypal requires items to be sent to buyers by a trackable means (like recorded delivery) so that there is proof of delivery - this prevents buyers from claiming that they did not receive their item (even when they actually did receive it) and claiming a refund.

Chances are that you will be ok as long as your buyer is an honest, genuine punter.  However, if they aren't, they may decide to file an 'item not received' dispute through Paypal and you won't have a leg to stand on as you have no evidence that they got their item.  It's the sellers word against they buyers and Paypal almost always favour the buyer.  I suppose you could ask the buyer to sign a receipt to state that they have received their item but I have no idea how that would stand up with Paypal in the event of a dispute.

S*** I hope that my parents don't get done, this is all I need.  I have messages from the person etc. and there's an address on the paypal site for the person, so surely that should stand up in law???

Easy enough to ask the person picking up the item to sign to say it is as described and in good condition and they have accepted and taken the goods. Personally I don't like paypal but ebay, being the owners of pp or the other way around, do try to make you do it that way, if you are selling you can make other arrangements but when buying if the seller says only pp then you are lumbered.

Definitely get them to sign for it then you have proof of receipt of goods.

In future get cash on collection for pick up items to avoid them putting in a claim via paypal for non receipt.

You can check to see if the address exists & also if you have a name you could check to see it=f they live at the address.

I would ask for proof of their address, such as a utility bill, council tax bill, etc as you can take note of the reference number on it & even take a copy if you have a scanner & return the copy only after they have posted their feedback

I agree with others, get them to sign something to say they have received it. It is so easy to do a paypal reversal as they always find in favour of the buyer if there is no trackable means of  dispatch.
If they haven't been yet you can refund their payment and ask them to pay you with cash...as others said it is better for you too so you don't have to pay paypal fees on top of everything else ebay will take off you!
Feedback is voluntary, nobody has to leave it but these days sellers can't leave negative for buyers which is really quite unfair.
- By welshlassy [gb] Date 01.03.09 12:29 UTC
Just for anyone using ebay and doesn't know this proof of postage will not protect  you if the buyer says they haven't received the goods its always better to send recorded then you are protected against this.  Also remember to keep reciepts as they can make a clame upto 45 days later I think don't quote me on that but it is quite a time after payment.

Having sold many things on e-bay i can say that they always favour the buyer over the seller which is frequently unfair . There  is one country we deal with a lot who too frequently , apparently , don't recieve their parcel .
Recorded delivery is the best way to go but some buyers will not bid as they don't want to pay the extra postage . Therefore you don't get best price for your item .
It is 'swings and roundabouts' .

Oh well all to late now, was advised to do PP by someone else so we did.  It's a fair bit of money to lose if we do lose it as well.

Hi perrodeagua

With regard how do you get the money, if you are new to Ebay the only way to pay and receive payment is through paypal via your credit or debit card so your buyer will already have paid for the item you have sold. I have only sold two items on Ebay and the second was collected. I offered the item as a collection service as the buyer was local and it would have saved tham a bit of money to collect. They collected it at my workplace after confirmation by messgaes through Ebay with I did not delete and I got the chap to sign for my item (playstaion). The feedback is a service provided to provide buyers and sellers with information about what type of customer you are. I have never had to request a refund for an item not received or had a dispute for non delivery so I cannot comment on that issue.

Hope it goes well

Sandra

You can ask the buyer to pay by cash on collection, and refund the paypal payment when they do. This happened to my daughter, and the buyer was OK about it.

Having been caught out one before, I have to agree with PippaJ and Charm. It is very easy to refund the purchaser's money through PayPal and ask them to pay cash on collection. PayPal will definitely find in their favour if they say the item was never received or was faulty, etc.

In my case I was able to provide written proof of collection, however as it was not official, ie from the Royal Mail (collected and signed for by purchaser) PayPal still found in favour of the purchaser and refunded them, directly from my bank account.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Ive been thinking about this, if the item was marked as "collection only" then paypal couldnt expect you to show proof of postage.
