I was reading a thread earlier in which two posters discovered that they had either been based at or born on the same RAF base, this got me wondering how many other CD'ers have got links with one another through the RAF or other forces that they ar not even aware of.

So, starting it off:-

I was born in 1959 at RAF Wegburg in what used to be West Germany, my parents were based there for about 4 years or so.
My younger sister was born in 1960 at RAF Wroughton and my youngest sister was born in 1963 at RAF Halton.
We lived in Aden from 1964 to 1966.
Both parents were in medicine, mother was in what used to known as Princess Mary's Royal Nursing Corps, father was in Pathology.
My youngest sister married a lad in the RAF and they were based in Coningsby, Athens and Brize Norton.

So has anybody else got any forces links?

There's two links already, Wroughton and Brize. Funnily enough I now live within spitting distance of Wroughton.

My first husband worked at RAF Leuchars. Even though we weren't RAF personnel, but civvies, we were given a house on the base. Hubby kept the runway lights going (among other things ;-) ) We lived in a house on reheat alley :-( Nothing worse than just getting baby to sleep and the jets take off :-) )

That's a good one. I can remember years ago the noise at my parents house in Lincs, they live on the flight path for Coningsby and when the Tornadoes went over that was enough to wake anything.

Pinky - we crash landed in Aden on a Beverley plane. My dad had flown back to the UK a couple of weeks before us and as my mum, brother and myself were the only family going back to the  UK at that time we were put in a transport plane with three seats bolted in for us to sit in. We lost an engine on the way and had to make an emergency landing at Aden. We were there 3 weeks while the engine was repaired - as I remember it was very hot, very smelly and both my brother and I caught fleas from the goats at the market :-)

My dad was a crypotgrapher and we lived in Nairobi for years when I was a child but also went to Egypt, Zanzibar, Bahrain amongst other places.

Also lived on camp at Bedford and Honington in the UK.

My elder brother went out to Egypt on a troopship when he was six weeks old and learnt to walk on one on his journey back to the UK. My mum was very excited but when they got to UK she stood him on the floor to show my dad and he promptly fell over - he had learnt to walk with the roll of the ship and couldn't manage it on land that didn't move :-)

Hi Harley
That is so spooky.
How old are you?
How old were you when you crash landed in Aden?

I started school there when I was 5yrs, it was at the height of all of the big troubles in Aden, we used to go to school in sand coloured armoured buses with barbed wire rolls along the windows and a soldier front and rear with fixed bayonets. It was extremely hot, we arrived in the cool season and my mother has since told us she thought she would die, in the cool season it was 80c plus.

I can remeber Xmas days on the beaches, shark nets, and throwing chicken legs to what my dad called the 'shite hawks' he meant seagulls.
There used to be goats every where, they would climb on to cars and trucks that had those massive fancy coloured decorative cloths over them.

We lived at Steamerpoint which was close to the harbour and the strangest site in the harbour at Aden was the Orion and freighters with London Buses on them.
We weren't allowed out to play between 12noon and 2pm and then when we did there had to be a soldier on the streets to watch out for us.
Whilst we were in Aden we also got some time out in East Africa, we went to what was then Tanganyika not sure what they call it now, on Safari, around Tree tops and Kilamanjaro also went to Nairobi and Mombasa. Whilst we were in Aden I can remember my dad had to go to Bahrain I think he went on the old Ark Royal, I can remember seeing photo's of a huge flight deck and men with silly bats.

I'm amused when you say about your brother when you got back to UK, it reminds me of our arrival back, it was summer time UK and we had hats gloves and coats on, there was lots of silly people wearing shorts and we were shivering, my youngest sister saw a 'bobby' with a helmet on she was fascinated and thought his head was that shape.
Strange days they were when I think back.

I am 52 Piinky :-) We were in Aden in 1962. We used to go to Mombasa on holiday :-) My dad was originally out in Kenya during the Mau Mau rising - before I was born and was sent back out there when I was 2 years old. He was stationed there but was sent to other bases as and when his skills were needed and we remained in Nairobi during these times except when he returned to UK - if there was space on a plane we could come back to visit family but if not then we stayed out there until he returned.

My mum was a civilian teacher at the base :-) Since we returned permanently to the UK following my dad's discharge on medical grounds she has refused to step foot out of the country, she says she spent so many years living out of trunks and suitcases that she just doesn't want to know now.

LOL MY younger  brother was born at Wegburg and my sister at Nocton Lincs :) I was born whilst my dad was stationed at RAF Compton Bassett (1955)...from there we moved to Wahn in Germany (1956), then to Calne Wiltshire (1958), Cologne Germany (1960), Digby Lincs (1963), Seletar Singapore (1964-8) and finally back to Digby  :) I left home after my dad came out of the RAF in 1971 :)

My dad was stationed at Butz when we were in Germany :)

Hubby was in the RAF and in training at Cranwell (just up the road from where we live now) in 1987 but came out of the RAF in 1989

I was at Cranwell in 80/81 N1 IOT, lived in those little houses at the bottom of the hill  in front of the air raid shelters and airfield, good old sash windows with rubber stoppers that my GSD's could climb out of no problem!  More than once I'd take the leads across the fields and 'relieve' a junior officer of his kidnappers, MY security/obedience trained boys, funny how they stopped practising their golfing swing once word got out you couldn't get off the field until 'Chef' came to collect them!

My Dad was at Seletar Singapore around 1966 -68 in think.  I remember going to an RAF school and drinking warm flavoured milk.  I remember the huge ants we used to have around the house.
I cant remember what the school was called, but we had to go on a bus very day and I hated it.  I still have the school badge with a helicopter on it.

I had to travel across the island from Seletar to Changi Grammar..the bus arrived at 6.30 in the morning :) :)

I have just embarked on this life with the RAF!!!  My hubby had served 18 years in the Navy but as of January this year he transferred over the RAF and we are soon to move to Cranwell!!!  We already live within an RAF community (as hubby was with part of the naval squadron within the RAF base before transferring).  Its a totally different way of life as being part of the Navy we were fortunate in that we didnt actually move around, we were at the last place for almost 8 years!  We have only been at our current house for a little over a year and will be moving to Cranwell probably June time and then moving again a year after that so its all go from now on!! :-D :-D
