Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Comes back from walk to pee etc in garden
- By DebbieP [gb] Date 28.02.09 10:02 UTC
Hi. I am sorry I have seen this somewhere before  but can't find it now. My puppy always asks to go out now and we can now take her for a walk. When we started taking her for a walk she did eventually do her business while out but she has stopped doing that now and comes back without doing anything. I have stopped taking her directly into the garden which is what she needs to do so she doesn't associate walk then home then pee but she sill needs to go out a few minutes having got inside. How do I encourage her to go outside the garden again. She is a 14 week golden retriever.

Hi,

Sometimes at that age they can go through a bit of a fear period and she may not feel secure enough to go out on walks just now.  You could get her weeing on cue in the garden.  When she's already started weeing (so as not to distract her) give your cue and then reward her when she's done, spend a week or so doing that so she builds up the association of the word with weeing and then gradually move the word forward to when she's just about to wee so it becomes a prompt for her weeing.  Then when she really has the idea of what the word means you could ask her to do it on a walk - I would be careful at the moment though as if there is an element of insecurity with weeing outside there should be no pressure at all, she may just go back to weeing on walks in her own time.   Personally I would probably work on the going on cue command in the garden because I like to have that on cue anyway but would leave her be on walks for just now making sure she's having as much fun and is as relaxed as possible :-)

I wouldn't worry, if she's asking to go into the garden after coming back from a walk that's pretty good for a weeny pupster.

Thank you. That makes sense. I think we are expecting too much. We are saying Hurry Up when she goes in the garden but assuming she understands that we have also been saying to encourage her to go but may be that is wrong. We will start saying it as she crouches to go now and get her used to that first in the garden. Thank you for your advice.

Hi I would'nt worry too much about her not going while out on a walk,I have GSD's and all my lot would wait till we got home to go to the loo. As she grows up she will "go" when she needs to.On the bright side you dont have to carry poo bags round looking for a bin lol
As long as she is clean in the house it's not a problem.

My labrador never goes when he's out, if we go to the coast for a day he does eventually give in but takes a while x

This subject always makes me laugh ;-)

We spend weeks and months teaching our puppies that they are supposed to go to the toilet in the garden (ie not in the house) and then wonder why they won't go anywhere else :-D Give them time, and use a toileting word or phrase and in time it will come.

It is actually an advantage if she waits to go at home, fewer smelly poo bags to carry around looking for a bin.

I have the opposite problem with my 9 year old who will hang on for dear life until we go out and sometimes I need to use 3 bags before she is done, as she won't just go in one go.

Remember a puppy prefers not to advertise it's whereabouts to possible predators.

My Rottie x GSD is nearly 4yrs old and she has never had a wee or a poo out on a walk as she just cannot relax enough.     I actually prefer this though as it saves me having to carry a huge bag full of poo around looking for an elusive bin.  I just let her straight down the garden when we get in.
My JRT on the other hand empties himself out on a walk and prefers it.
I wouldn't stop your girl from going straight out to relieve herself when she gets home as you don't want her to start going in your house.
Stop worrying about it enjoy your girl and enjoy not having to lug bags of poo round on your walk it may happen soon enough.

My younger golden will not poo when out for a walk, unless she is of the lead, she waits till she gets home and then asks to go out to the garden.
I expect your golden will be fine when off the lead.
