Hello all,

My 10 month old Boxer is having very inconsistent poos! They tend to be firm first thing but by the end of the day he is doing very runny ones and I'm sorry for being so graphic but on occassion it's just a dribble of liquid.

I have messed around with his food a bit over the last month as I tried to put him on the RMB diet but although I tried to do it slowly he didn't take to it too well (I'm going to buy the books recommended on here and try that again in the near future.)

For now I have reverted back to his normal diet of wainwrights biscuits and beef mince in the morning and beef or tripe chunks in the evenings. He has been back on this for about a week now but his poo still isn't right.

He's seems fine in himself, still jumping around like a loon and full of energy but I'm worried all the same!

Any advice welcome or should I go to the vet to make sure nothing is wrong internally?

Thanks
Rosie

Hi Rosie,

have you had your puppy vet checked and a stool sample analysed?  She could have SIBO, giardia or a number of other things which need to be ruled out.  It may also be an intolerant reaction to diet - I notice you feed beef, many dogs with sensitivities don't do well on beef.

I'd get the vet check first if not already done and if nothing untoward shows up probably put the youngster onto an exclusion trial diet for several weeks to identify if there is an intolerance to some ingredients for example.

regards, Teri

Thanks Teri, I have made an appointment to see the vet so hopefully they can rule out anything serious.

He was being fed beef mince before and was fine with it. The problems only really started when I decided to go with the RMB diet. I did lots of research on it and liked the idea of him eating as nature intended but I should have known better than to start messing around with his food. Hopefully he's just got a sensitive tummy and it will settle again.

He certainly isn't off his food so I guess that's a good sign!

Hi, it all sounds pretty much the same as my puppy, I got him when he was 5 months and he had exacltly the same problem in the eve stools; vet reckoned it was most likely the food so I tried several changes in the space of months.
I ended up excluding grains all together and moved to a protein rich diet (even though many seem worried about proteins... ); that solved the problem although his evening stools are always a bit softer then the first thing in the am, but I reckon that is pretty normal considering he has had many more hours to extract the water...

I met a lady in the park that was desperate because her boxer was just like yours, very lively and hyper (boxerlike!), but he had diarrhea almost all his life and the vet also couldn't find anything wrong, when I saw again a few weeks ago she had swicthed him to a boxer dry food (I think it was Royal Canin) and that sorted it all out straight away!! Can't tell you how pleased she was! It might just be that, I hear boxers get easly stomach upsets

We've just been to see the vet and he gave Nero a full check over and states that he has Colitis. He's given him a jab, some tablets and he's to have half his normal amount of food for a couple of days.

I felt a bit of a fool telling the vet that he has been a bit lethargic in the evenings as my mad Boxer is licking him to death with his tail wagging so much his whole bottom was moving! The vet looked at me as if to say "yeah right"!

In response to Dodigna.....I asked the vet about Boxers and their tummies and he agreed that they do appear to be a breed who have sensitive insides and don't always take to a change in diet too well!

Fingers crossed it all clears up over the next few days.

Thanks for your help

Id suggest trying him on lamb bones, beef bones are abit difficult to digest.

Hope he gets better.
