Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Arden grange replacement.
- By Hugos There [gb] Date 24.02.09 16:42 UTC
I am looking for a replacement for Arden grange.
I really like the ingredients, but it contains fish meal and my pup has a fish allergy.

Does anyone know of a similar food without the fish.

when mine were pups (2 cockers) I fed Burns mini bites - don't think there's fish in that.  it has much lower protein and fat content than AG though sorry.  Are you looking for something to closely match the analysis of AG without the fish meal of course or are you just looking for suggestions for any puppy food without fish meal in it?

sorry I just checked and Burns mini bites have ocean fish listed as one of the ingredients.  The best match is the Burns high energy lamb - can be fed to puppies and underweight or small breeds.  No fish in it at all. (lamb and rice)

hope this helps

Ideally I'd like something as close to Arden Grange as possible. :-)

Maybe have a look at JWB website.

Turkey and veg has no fish or turkey and rice.

How about CSJ Command Performance-the Active 24 looks similar to AG.

Wow,it's tough to find anything without fish meal in it.  Nearly impossible it seems to find anything without fish oils.  If your dog can tolerate fish oil than something like Purina Pro Plan might be okay.  Or even the Arden Grange wet food if you want to mix wet and dry.

I would try emailing some of the manufacturers and ask for recommendations.

Is fish his only allergy or does anything else need avoiding?

Thanks. I don't know this range but will check it out.

He definitely can't have fish meal but we are not totally sure about his sensitivity to fish oil. I would like to avoid it if I can, just to be on the safe side.

It appears he has quite a few allergies but fish and rabbit are his main food issues.

If he can tolerate fish oil how about one of the wet foods like naturediet or natures harvest?

I've just had a look at the Berties leaflet I have and they have a dried lamb and rice version which doesn't contain fish meal:

Ingredients: Whole Rice, Lamb, Corn, Chicken Gravy, Sugar Beet Pulp, Whole Linseed, Brewers Yeast,
Whole Egg Powder, Natural Seaweed, Minerals, Vitamins, Yucca Extract, Prebiotic FOS

Protein 26.0% Oil 14.0% Fibre 2.5% Ash 9.0%

Personally I'd use it as a mixer as it seems predominantly grain-based, and with dogs being mainly meat-eaters I'd rather the main ingredient was meat.

Have you considered a home prepared diet?

Thanks i'll check it out.

He's currently fed on Arden Grange large breed puppy and Natures Diet along with tripe and chicken mince.

I am thinking of feeding him raw, I really like the idea, but am still researching it. If I'm honest I'm just a little nervous about taking the final step and letting go of the security of the complete, especially as he is a large breed puppy.

Thanks everyone.
I have just phoned CSJ feeds and they are going to send me a sample of the CP24 active.
Having checked the ingredients and analysis it does look very similar to Arden Grange but without the fish.

If you are really stuck Arden Grange have a brillant nutritionist her name is vanessa if you ring Argen Grange they will get her to ring you and if you explain the problem she will try and help even if it means suggesting using another make of food  I found her extremely helpfully.
