My pup age 7months is at the vet just now for x rays, he thinks she might have a dislocated hip, can anyone let me know if this would need an operation, never had anything like this before in any of my dogs,  she has been jumping in and out of the patio tubs so I will have to move them all, noticed her holding her leg up this morning so phoned the vet.

Would this stop her from being shown?  After its been fixed.

What is the saying "never rains, but it pours" in the past couple of weeks, my hoover has packed in, so has microwave, and a lot of other stuff that is going to cost money, money that I don't have at the moment grrrr!!!!!!!

No wonder I get depressed LOL!!!!!

Vet phoned last night, kept pup in, now saying hip is not dislocated and going to do more x rays this morning.

He was hinting at Legge Perthes, but I feel he is going down the wrong route, I have never seen legge perthes before so dont know what to look for, I have been very lucky with my dogs over the years no problems like this before, I still say she has damaged something jumping down from either the setee or the patio tubs, the bottom bit of her leg was limp and I honestly thought she had broken a bone or something else.

Can any of you give me any advise on what to ask, I have not to phone until 12 this afternoon.  If I dont get any satisfactory answers off him I am going to ask her to be referred elsewhere.

I have been at this vet a long time and he has been very good so far, only runs the practice himself.  But again I have never had anything "major" wrong with any of my dogs.

sorry to hear about the little one :(

If it's a dislocation then it's likely it can be manipulated into position again - probably under GA as it would be very painful.  I don't know anything about Legge Perthes - I've never heard of it.

Perhaps if not dislocated it's a fracture or even just a bad knock rather than anything more serious.  Without your vet's assessment of the x-ray it's pretty much impossible to know what you should ask him as, hopefully, if minor there will be straightforward instructions for you on management of pain relief and rest.  If you are concerned at all then by all means seek a second opinion - actual 'specialist' referral is likely to be expensive and not necessarily what you're meaning by referral. 

If for second opinion purposes then the Dalblair clinic where we take ours when down your way is excellent with numerous vets and state of the art equipment - I'd happily recommend them.  You'll probably find one of them specialises in this area as being such a large practice several have dedicated interests.

Fingers crossed that she's on the mend soon.  Please let me know how she is and look after yourself too meantime :)

Sorry to hear about your pup.  I have heard of and seen a dog with Legge Perthes and limping is usually
the first symptom, vet will then find the problem on x ray, have a read here

Don't know which vet you use but try MacKenzie Bryson for 2nd oponion, I have my vet refer me to them for
all orthapedic and eye work for any of my dogs and never had a problem.

Hope the news when you phone at lunchtime is good and it is something simple.  If they do diagnose something
that is going to need surgery go and see them and get them to explain it to you on the white board and show
you xrays and any other tests they may have done.

Im with Craig Friels in Kilmarnock and have been for a long time now.   Ive phoned Islas breeder and as far as she is aware there is no history of Legge perthes in her lines, after all I have Pearl here and she is Islas aunt and ive had no problems with her.

I thought if it was legge perthes she would have been limping for quite some time, but she hasnt as you know from dog training classes.  Will just wait and see what Craig says later on ,thanks for the info on MacKenzie Bryson, I used to use their puppy classes before I go to ringcraft.  Been there for eye testing.

Any news on the little one Irene?

Phoned at lunch time and was told it is a dislocated hip, so the vet is going to try and put it back into place, if not , she will need an operation, I have to phone back at 6pm, I've not been "worth a button" all day for worrying about her.

Still have to keep positive though.

Well not so good news, Isla is being referred to vet hospital in Glasgow for an operation, he has managed to fix it back in, but am just home with her 9.55pm. and she is still limping and holding up the leg.  Its definately a dislocated hip. so got pain killers for her.

Will now have to wait and see when she has to go to Glasgow.  I gather her show carrer will be over before its started, well never mind she wont be going anywhere anyway.

I dont have Star insured at the moment ,but she will be by tomorrow , just in case of any accidents with her.

I've checked back regularly for an update :(  Sorry Isla is having to go through all of this - the GUVH are fantastic though and I'm just 5 minutes away if you want to stop by for a cuppa :)

I'm sure future show and breeding plans are the least of your concerns - give her a big cuddle from us and try not to worry too much.  Hopefully she'll be swiftly put right and possibly still without the need for an op when seen by a specialist.

I think you're wise to insure Star - it's all very well putting money aside in an account but if it hasn't had long to build up then it's not much use in this type of scenario :(

Keep me posted and take care of yourself meantime.  You've had a traumatic time too!

So sorry to hear about your little one's problems. Don't be too dispondent tho, many years ago I had a GSD with a hip score of 0:1 only to dislocate her hip following a fall at agility. The hip was manipulated back into the socket, and although I stopped "asking" her jump anything, she went on to live a very active life. Her movement was fantastic and if I can recall she only ever had to visit the vets/osteopath on two occasions when I noticed a slight change to her movement. After a bit of manipulation and rest, she was fine again. Good luck.

Isla goes into vet hospital tomorrow morning, so, hopefully she will get her operation and be ok after it, I'm really worried though she is only 7 .1/2months old.

It is always worrying when they have to have an aneasthetic, but I'm sure Isla will be fine.

Update on Isla, she has gone through her op and is doing well, hope to have her home on Sat/Sun.

Luckily I have her insured as they have told me the bill will be £900+.  I am so glad I got her insured I was not going to.

Did you Isla home from the vet school yet?  Hope she is home and enjoying loads of cuddle from you.

She came home yesterday, feeling very sorry for herself, a lot of  that lovely coat shaved off  grrr !!! LOL !!! 

Yesterday she was very quiet, lay in the cage no problems,  but, today, can't keep her in the cage, so far, wants out to play and I was told to keep her quiet, not too much excercise, no play, shes a pup and when you have two pups different ages they want to play,  if I put her in the cage, she can get out, and thats with part of the puppy pen round it. If I shut the door, she yelps, yelps and yelps,  grrr!!!!  My neighbours will soon be compalining (again) about the noise of the dogs.

Thanks goodness the caravan opens next week, just might go there and see how I get on with her at least they can make a noise as the site is not open to visitors yet. She goes back in 10 days to get the staples out and I think she has to get physio, but not sure about that yet, it says it on the paperwork I got home with me.

It must be so hard trying to keep her quiet with another puppy around the house as i know what Robbie is like and he is 6 months old, he definitely wouldn't stay quiet if there was another dog around. They probably wonder why they cannot play together as they have always been great friends bless her hope she gets better soon.
