Hello, my dog has elbow dysplasia and the vet recommended I feed hill's science prescription j/d. At the moment he is still on orijen puppy which I am bout to change to adult (he is 11 months old...)
When I took hill's bag home I looked at the ingredients and they look much inferior to orijen, orijen already coms with glucosamine, condroitin and fish oils and not once the word derivatives (unlike in the hill's ingredients) is mentioned....

what would you do? orijen is high in protein and with no fillers and I am tempted to keep him on this brand, but on the other hand I don't want to cause his joints any stress

what should I do!!!!!???????

There was a recent thread on the Hills that revealed some very good testimonials.

My friends dogs have elbow dysplasia and she feeds Royal Canin, this contains glucosamine and condroitin, since on this she has seen an improvement, especially in her older boy. 

I have never tried Hills or Orijen but if I had the choice (and the funds) I would feed Orijen.

I am just concerned these "prescription" foods might contain antinflammatories that might result harmful in the long run, they guarantee results or your money back and might treat the symptoms rather then help heal the cause...

As long as you are merely requiring a preventative I think it is wise to avoid these if possible but come the day any arthritis develops, inflammation is what you have got and you may well need to give anti-inflammatories in some form or other as they do treat the inflammation not just treat the symptoms with pain relief.

My friend's Rottie is on Hills JD as she has recently had an elbow operation - friend is pleased with the results of the JD but I nearly choked when she told me the cost per bag

yes very dear indeed! I would be worried to know how much of the price is in marketing rather then prime ingredients...

could you possibly tell me more about the operation? was it one elbow or both? how much did she pay and most importantly what was the recovery time? I have read 6 months! No way I can keep my 11 month old still for that long!!!!

I will email her and ask her!! I think it was just one elbow. I'll let you know! Hers is only 7 months, a real baby and I know she is finding it very hard to keep her out of mischief!!

my heart really goes to her! It is heart breaking when puppies have to go through things like this and cannot have a normal puppy life!
I would really appreciate some info from people who have gone through with it themselves. I am looking into the arthroscopy at the moment, but insurance won't pay so shopping around, eventually it will have to be done. I am managing with synoquin and the limp is better without need of anti-inflammatory.
