Hi all
As you all know I came onto this forum with a very rocky start :) But I think we would all agree we have put all that behind us know and we are getting on well :)
I do not want to jepordise things between us but I was wandering if any of you experienced breeders could help me? You all now I have sibes and one day would like to breed them, BUT I am dong things the right way this time I am going to ringcraft ande enjoying it spectating at shows and I am even entering my bitch in her/my first exemption show in January 2003 (I know it is not Crufts but is a start :) ) I am following all the right things to do reading all the books asking for advice on threads reading interesting threads on breeding etc. As I will not be having a litter for a couple of years I thought that know would be the best time to start researching my foundation bitches lines etc. The question is how do I go about this? What is it I have to research parents, grandparents etc
Any help would be great. I do not want people to attack thinking I am jumping into this as I am trying to do things properly
Thanks in advance for the help

Hi
I,m new to all this to, I started showing 2 years ago and i,m breeding my first litter now (hopefully)
I found the person who gave me the most help was the breeder of my bitch, she knew what lines she was from and the best stud dogs to choose from to complement her lines, hopefully your dogs came from a good breeder and they will help you, as I no I would never have coped with out mine being at the end of the phone and putting up with all my questions (even silly ones)

Yes you are right it would take years of research if you had to do it all yourself, even if you attended every show for two years I doubt if you would be able to tell which of the dogs you saw were suitable for your bitch with out the help of an experianced breeder. :)

Good for you, its not an easy thing to get into but it can be lots of fun and you'll meet other breeders at shows and make new friends who will be more than happy to give you advice and tips on handling your dog in the ring. And when the time comes to breed these people will give you all support you need (including moral at 12:00am when panic starts to set in due to sheer exhaustion and youve lost all concept of time :-) )
Don't knock the exemption shows sometimes they can be harder to get placed as the classes are so huge and they are good practice.
I know that there are a few people at shows who take great pleasure in picking other peoples pride and joy to pieces, or are in it for sheer vainity, but i would say most are good hearted people who care and want to help whenever they can.
Im not a Sibe breeder but feel free to email.
We all have to start somewhere good luck to you

I relied heavily on the breeder of my bitch, and the owner of her sire. Gradually after studying the breed I developed my own idea of what I thought the breed standard was like. I would play the guess what the judge will place game. I also watched the offspring of dogs I was interested in using. Were the mothers related to my bitch, if so a better chance of geting similar. Also after having bred, reared and kept dogs from puppyhood, I now know more about how the puppy might develop, and am better at picking a puppy that is promising. I now know looking back at photos, and having seen some of them as adults, that I definately picked the wrong pup from my first litter. I would say I made a step forward, but two back.
Well, we all have to start off somewhere, and I did three years ago when I decided I would breed from my bitch. I first contacted her breeder and spoke to her discussing the pedigree and what lines would be suitable. She was a fountain of knowledge with years of experience and very helpful. I then contacted the breed society for more information and also got advice from them. I bought 'Book of the Bitch' and 'Breeding Better Dogs' and numerous breed related books and studied them intently. I found out as much as I could about all the necessary health checks and had those carried out. I was one of those posters asking for a stud dog, but this was just to broaden my field. I had already selected one, but wanted to see what else was around. (I got reprimanded on this board and didn't post for a long time again). I also worked out my dogs cycle so I could plan roughly when she would have puppies. I didn't want a litter around the christmas time. So DOGS, like you I spent a long time preparing. I ended up with a beautiful litter, found excellent homes for them all and kept one. I don't show, but I do work my dogs and I find I am learning all the time. Good luck with all your plans

And you sold your champion bitch too! :D But I believe in fate, and everything has worked out, hasn't it?!

Ah, but I knew she was the best in the litter, though was trying to be sensible and not keep one for another year or so, but fated it was!! :D

hi dogs
may have missed some of your postings, are your sibes from showing lines and stock, the breeder is always the first port of call, who would of also got all info on the lines from the previous breeding, it will be difficilt if your breeder does not know of the lines and stock behind there breeding, regards tina

Hi, dont know if this will be of any help, but there is an online pedigree database (site is free to join), it is US based. NOt sure how useful it will be for Sibes, but it has over 31,000 American Cockers, and I have found it very useful for Pugs too. Cant do linnks but it is www.online-pedigrees.com. While it wont tell you about the dogs, it will at least give you the breeding details. Have you thought about joining a Sibe list? Being new to pugs I was delighted to be invited to join a Pug list, and the people I have 'met' through it have be so very helpful and friendly - and have pointed me to loads of helpful web sites and information.
