Topic Dog Boards / General / what do you call it when.....

at puppy class last week I was shown how to get my dog to approach me on the right hand side, move round the back of me and end up sitting at my left hand side.  I can't remember the command for it to practice but would like to do some practice with the wee man before the class next week.

Your talking about a finish but which command you were using could be different to what others use. I use "in" others use "finish"

it wasn't either of those it was either 'right' something or something 'round' but definitely wasn't 'right round'.  hmmm back to the drawing board.

round to heel
could that be the command you,re looking for?

You can call it Heinz beans if you wish, the term is irrelevant, the tone and repeated intent shown is what's important. You just need to stick to a command and be consistant with your  body posture to avoid confusing the dog.

I agree toolz .the only problem you may come across is that some trainers can be a bit sticky about you using their chosen commands. I know I have run into problems because I have changed classes a couple of times and
been corrected for using commands that another class has used, its quite annoying when you dog is part trained.
I had an incident recently when I usedthe verbal command down together with a stamping motion with my foot.
Whispa has started to learn the foot movement alone  for distance work (early stages.) Current trainer told me to stop because it wasnt right.
Otherwise finish or heinz beans LOL whatever suits

We learned it as AROUND.  But my girl confused that with DOWN.  I said CIRCLE instead.

I would call that a 'right hand finish' and my command for it would be 'finish'. I taught my dog that one first, then we progressed to left hand finish, where they go from sitting facing you and swivel themselves round backwards so they are sitting at heel on your left (not a very good description, but I know what I mean!). I still used the same command as we stopped using the right hand one, but my dog followed my hand signal more than the verbal command anyway.

furriefriends, that is what I meant.  It is confusing for me when the trainer shouts out the command and I am using something totally different.

That exercise is normally called "finish". Personally I just use "close" as this is the position they need to end up in together with a hand signal that indicates to go round. I have also heard "finish" or "round". As many have mentioned, ultimately it really doesn't matter what it used, as long as it is consistent.

In my classes, people can use whatever cues/commands they want as long as they are consistent with what they use. Stamping a foot however for example I do pick up on, not because it is an issue with the actual signal, but because it basically acts as an aversive. Even if the dog in question is used to it and sees it as a cue/command/signal only, dogs around them in class often get startled and worried about it.

Must admit I just use heel, that is after all what I want, and the dog will attain that position depending on where it starts from and if correction is needed then close.

Cheekychow,
This is the command I was taught to use for the discipline you describe.

well done bilbobaggins - round to heel, that's the one!  Thank you.  Oops just realised that pavlova said that one too.

Thats interesting Lurchergirl, reasonable point , hadn't viewed it that way although it is more of a movement than a hard stamp.
Mind I try to be good student and conform to my trainer so no more stamping (LOL). Hopefully I am going to stay put with this class if no more changes in family things happen. She is an apdt trainer and seems good too

That's the English finish, as opposed to the continental one where they swivel on your left to end up at heel. I taught Ellie that continental first as 'Finish', so I use 'Round' for the English one. :-)
