Topic Dog Boards / General / Keeping a castrated old male with un-spayed females

Does anybody have a castrated old male dog and also young un-spayed females?
Does this cause you any problems?
Do you have to seperate them when the girls have seasons?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 19.02.09 19:56 UTC
Castrated dogs can still have urges and not uncommonly still have abilities!
- By Pinky Date 19.02.09 20:06 UTC
Ok so he can get a 'stiffy' and try to use it. Would the bitches allow him to?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 19.02.09 20:08 UTC
Yep! They have their urges too.

Oh blast.! :(
When I first posted some time back asking for all of the negatives about getting this dog nobody told me that I'd have a problems with trollopy girls and a dirty old man :(

So will a stairgate to separate them be enough, baring in mind that he is not the most athletic of chaps.

When my older Sheltie had her 2 seasons she was extremely shy and retiring and when we were out (on lead) she would not encourage a male even when at her 'peak of receptiveness'. All the way through if we ever encountered a male she snapped and growled and hid between my feet.

The only difference is that, depending on how long ago he was neutered, he shouldn't sire any puppies ;-)
- By lumphy [gb] Date 19.02.09 20:28 UTC
my neutered boy only bothered with my in season bitch when she was ready for mating. He was then pretty full on and she encouraged him. Only at this point they needed seperated. Up till then he didnt bother at all.

But all dogs are different.

I have a 10 yr old neutered dog and he has never shown any interest in my bitch, now 6. I had him  done as soon as I got her and he has never indicated that he even knows she's a girl. As Lumphy says, they're all different.

He was neutered well over 5 years ago. He's a rescue 10yr old, recovering from kennel cough and bronchitis, he's gathering strength daily.

My girls are not in season yet but they are very highly groomed, polished and perfumed and no doubt smell like a tarts bedroom to him.

I had expected that I would need to seperate them at the height of season, but I had hoped that a stairgate would do the job.

This old chap back legs couldn't even support his own weight if he should attempt to mount, much less do any thrusting! :-p

Thanks for that shanab, I was beginning to think perhaps rescueing this old man was going to give me major problems :)

remember although he cant produce anymore he can still mate and tie with a bitch.  i had a friend who didnt mind this happening, but it kept her bitch in a prolonged season for about an extra three weeks.

Hi there

I have 2 neutered dogs along with an entire bitch.  When my bitch comes into season there's lots of play and flirting with one of the dogs but the older boy isnt even interested.  He was castrated at 3 years old. I wouldnt put it off you rescuing this boy.  Mine don't seem to have as strong urges, but are still somewhat interested! Nothing I can't handle though!!

He may not even be bothered at all.  Best not to worry about something that may never happen.

Good luck

I keep an 8 year old castrated Bracco, castrated 3 years ago, with my girls throughout their season. They do try and encourage him but he looks at them with that droopy Bracco face and is clueless. Previous to being castrated he sired two litters.

yeh, i have 1 castrated dog, only castrated last sept, and 3 entire bitches. Not even 5 months after his castration one of my girls come into season and he had no clue whatsoever, previously he was overs*xed and couldnt get enough. he doesnt even notice when they display to him. But on the other hand my friends lab who was castrated young goes mad for the ladies. so i guess its from dog to dog!!

I agree with you, and watching him with them he's only had 2 bouts of flirty interest, most of the time all he's interested in is food :)  we rescued him last Saturday and he's just starting to feel his feet, he's not in brilliant condition and is quite old for his age.

He sounds lovely. How nice that you could rescue him. Our oldest Dogue (a rescue, almost 7) is neutered, and had previously sired at least one litter. He does not bother our bitches now although when he was younger would show interest. Actually he was quite a good indicator of how ready they were. Although I would never leave him with an in-season bitch if we were out, he is generally no trouble and they don't mind him. Actually they're more likely to pester him than the other way round!

Hi Pinky,

My rescue boy terrier was castrated at 4years and lived to 12 with two young flirty girls. As some of the posters said he did used to flirt with them when they were ready, but nothing with any real zeal and certainly nothing I couldn't handle :)

Certainly nothing that would put me off having another rescue dog as long as he was castrated , OH is on the look out for one at the mo. :)

I've got 2 neutered boys, one shows no interest at all (at 16+ not really surprising!) and the other keeps the girls "clean". He follows them round like a hoover but never tries to mount them, even when they become flirty with him. He is a very good judge of when they are coming into season. I think you just need to play it by ear.

I'm so glad you decided to go ahead and take this boy.  I'm sure you won't regret it!!  Well done for giving him a forever home in his twilight years!!

Well I feel happier now having heard from all of you that have entire girls with a castrated boy. I will keep my eye on them all and when my girls do come in to season I'll keep them seperated if it looks like it's needed.

After the initial interest in them he seems more food focused now, things may change when they have seasons but we shall see.

Anyway we'll have to work with it I couldn't turn the old chap out now even though we've only had him a week, he's decided this is his home :-D
