Topic Dog Boards / Showing / kicking back leg out, any suggestions pl
- By klauchlan [gb] Date 13.11.02 21:31 UTC
Hi all.
Was at ringcraft, and malki has started to flick one of his back legs out,
does anyone have a suggestions, why all of a sudden he is doing this,
i cant remember of him hurting his self, one of the ladies says he is very stiff on his back legs also, what could this be? I havent had him at a show for a while, and he is due to go to the L.K.A, but if he is still doing this there isnt much
point, so any help would be appreciated.

ps he is just over a year old now.

Hi Kelly,
Don't really know just thinking aloud.Has he been running about any more than usual or lying somehere cold that could have made him stiff. Not much help, sorry

I cant realy think on anything anne, he doesnt sleep anywhere bar my bed and the sofa ( bad i know ). He has always been very nutty at running up and down the stairs, like a steam train, but he hasnt for a day or so. Its very worrying, not knowing what the prob is, he isnt sore, as ive been moving it and he doesnt flinch.

Kelly I don't know but I would ask a vet to take a look, if he really is stiff in the back legs he may have hurt himself. I know more expence but something must be wrong dogs don't limp for effect. It could be trivial and sorted with short course of some anti-inflammatory pills. So pop along and see what they have to say, still time to put it right before LKA. Ja:)kie

Thanks jackie, he isnt limping, he seems to be just a bit stiff in the rear end, which does nothing for his movement. If he isnt better by morning i think i will pop through to the vets, thanks again jackie

Did you ever find out what was wrong with your dog? I've got a 10 month old Pembroke Welsh Corgi female that is experiencing the same problems. She is due for her first show in 3 weeks and this is actually making me nervous. Thanks!

Re Corgis - small breeds (the JRT is a particular sufferer) can slip a tendon on their hock which causes them to 'skip' and kick the back leg - this normally puts the tendon back again - but check with your vet incase it's something which will get progressivly worse :-(

Could have pulled something in his back but I'm not even qualified to make a guess, my moto is if in doubt down to the vets, I have learned over the years what can be left for a few days and what can't. If I a not sure what the trouble is, especialy in a young dog I would rather have it checked out. all the best in the morning then, Ja:)kie

It sounds as though your Malki has a slipping patella, a lot of small dogs get this. What breed is he? I had a terrier that had this problem and it won't go away on its on, when they flick the leg it flicks the kneecap back in place. My dog eventually had to have it operated on because it got stuck and wouldn't go back and it caused a lot of pain.

Perhaps you should have it looked at.

I don't know what breed you have but when moving your dog do you string him up or move him on a loose lead. the reason i ask is that one of my dogs does the same when i string him up usually to keep his head off the floor .But when he's moved on a loose lead he doesn't do it

If vet inconclusive, try a doggy chiropractor. I was sceptical but they are miracle workers. Go for one who is a McTimony chiropractor. They are very gentle and my dogs go crazy with delight now when they see their lady!
