Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / First meal after surgery

Our WSS has just had surgery today (removal of inguinal undescended testicle) and he hasn't eaten since 7pm Wednesday or had water since this morning...he's not a food-oriented character at the best of times, and can get a little thin. Does anyone have any recommendations for meals to tempt him/build him back up till he gets past his anaesthetic hangover?

To encourage drinking...put a TINY drop of milk into the water...if you can you can use puppy milk or carnation to help that won't affect his tummy...HTH, not sure about food as I have utter gannets! Though maybe a bit of scrambled egg made with puppy or carnation milk will help? All the best, Dawn

Thank you Dawn, he just seems utterly worn out, poor boy, so will try the scrambled egg in the morning for him

hi i know weebox isnt very good food but if you mix just a spoon full in his normall food this should help him eat ...my 16week puppy never wanted to eat ..so i started giving her this and now shes eating her normall food without it and shes looking very well now :).....hope he as a speedy recovery x

Had the same operation on a BC boy, and, although quiet for a while, he did eat.  I totally agree about using evaporated milk to encourage the water drinking.  How about something tasty and smelly like sardines?

Thanks everyone for all the ideas--wish I'd tuned in this morning! I gave him scrambled eggs with salmon (!), straight off the guilt trip menu, and took him to work with me for a meeting rather than leave him on his lonely own in a crate. If it hadn't been so dreadful I'd have laughed, because he had the worst ever wind and sat silently stinking under the table with people trying to pretend everything was perfectly normal. I'd say you had to be there to see the funny side of it, but you'll all be very glad you weren't.

I will try the evaporated milk though.

If it weren't for the priceless sight of a set of stuffed shirts sat round a table studiously ignoring the Venusian emissions I have begged to be excused too! Thankfully Diesel is much his usual self and bouncing about--the best news there is.
