Topic Dog Boards / General / rules and regs for dogs as cargo?
- By sam Date 19.02.09 12:58 UTC
Does anyone know where i can get a copy of the various rules and regs issued by IATA (or similar) regarding travelling live animals (specifically dogs) by air.

yes, IATA website:

http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/live_animals/pets.htm

plus, DEFRA Pet Passport website:

http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/pets/

hmmm......unfortunately i have already looked at that iata website but as they want to charge me $145 for the regulation manual I was hoping to foind the rules on welfare etc somewhere on line.

you got me confused, as both those links have quite a lot of info which look like rules and regs to me,
incl several free downloadable PDF's.

what exactly are you looking for?

Why not contact someone like Ryslip?

Is it travel within the UK or europe or USA
- By sam Date 19.02.09 20:43 UTC
no the actual rules and regs that iata operating airlines have to adhere to are only available in the expensive manual. Basically im really annoyed about the way my pup was expected to be treated today (I prevented it)when i took him to houston and want to write letter of complaint but would like to know EXACTLY what duty of care IATA bodies have to comply with.

what do you mean by the phrase 'duty of care'.

i think the answer to your question is still on the IATA website.
it states thus:

All birds and animals must be imported under healthy,
humane conditions. U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA) regulations
require that careful arrangements be
made with the carrier for suitable cages, space, ventila-
tion, and protection from the elements. Cleaning,
feeding, watering, and other necessary services must be
provided. Under the Animal Welfare Act, the
Department of Agriculture is responsible for setting the
standards concerning the transportation, handling, care,
and treatment of animals.

So I'm guessing all you need to do is check with the Dept of Ag or read the Animal Welfare Act?
