Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / best diet for elbow dysplasia
- By dodigna [gb] Date 19.02.09 12:38 UTC
Hi I was wondering what is best to feed a dog with elbow dysplasia; at the moment he is still on orijen puppy, the vet advised hill's j/d... Got a bag yesterday, but very dubious about ingredients on it...

What's needed in most quantities in his case? orijen is mostly protein...
any advise?

When my dog (5 month puppy) was diagnosed with elbow displasia (UAP), he was switched onto adult food (suprisingly this was something the vet agred with the breeder on!).
Any posibility of encouraging growth rate and/or excess weight needs avoiding.
I personally would not want to feed Orijen due to the high protein content, but if you are happy with that food then it's worth considering switching to the adult variety.

While diet is important in the management of displasia, so is exercise , this is something that your vet should have discussed with you, as building the muscles up really help to support the joints as well as helping to keep the joints healthy & mobile.

Also a good quality Glucosamine HCL suppliment can really help. I highly reccomend Synflex Original (just google for it) :)

interesting about the adult switch... see I read that with dysplasia in the puppy you should avoid too much calcium and puppy food contains less because puppies tend to absorb too much of it.

As for exercise we couldn't keep him in anyway, we walk him religiously off leash for at least a full 40 minutes every day, twice on most days, if he doesn't run too much we can make it an hour, and then again a shorter one in the eve. I know we are supposed to keep him quite moderate, but he is almost 11 months now and I want to keep him mobile for all his wellbeing.

For supplements I had him on human form glucosamine condrotin msn, (works very well), but will try synoquin next to see if it works even better.

im pretty sure that puppy food contains more as puppies need it for growing bones?

feeding too much calcium can cause skeletal abnormalities, puppies absorb more then they should, or something like that... at least in the fast growing breeds
