A boring question but you always answer them so well!
I have my puppies having their first vac at 6 weeks as the vet recommended. They wont go to their new homes till 8-9 weeks. Would the health check at 6 weeks old with their vacs surfice or should i get them health checked again before they go?
Oh and the new owners have all been told to do a vet check by 72 hours of getting them home too.
I am currently over doing everything but just think they will spend the next 4 weeks at the vets at this rate!

Other people will chip in, but I would not want the breeder to vaccinate the pups. And I think 6 weeks is a bit early - especially if mum's immunity lasts for approximately 10 weeks. I could be wrong though. Perhaps your vet is just wanting to squeeze more money out of you? Are you doing the full course of vaccinations or just the first one?

I wouldnt let the vet vaccinate at 6 wks my puppies usually leave a 7-8 wks the new owners do the first vac either 8 and 10 or some 10-12 wks

Is there any reason why they're having their first jab so early, or is it just the parvo part?
This is what Canigen say about their DHP vaccine.I wouldn't vaccinate so early - not until they've been away from the dam and settled into their new homes for a few days.

I think the one vet check at the time of vaccs is good enough especially when the new owners will get them looked at shortly after they take them home,
I do have mine vaccinated at 6 and 8 weeks because I like to get them used to the sights and sounds of the world early on before the fear stages have a bad effect, I have left my Paps indoors until after the vaccs in the past and that resulted in nervous pups, something I'm very keen to avoid again, just the way I like to do things with mine :-)

I wouldn't vaccinate any pups before 8 weeks old, and I always have them vet checked just before they leave me, for peace of mind so I know when they leave me they are going 100% fit and healthy, after all anything could crop up if they are checked at 6 weeks then leave you at 8/9 weeks there could be a 4 week gap between your vet checking them and the new owners vet.

Nowt wrong with taking the pups out to the vet, on the bus, in a taxi before the vaccinations (carried of course) but I don't think they need to be vaccinated at that time.

IMO 6 weeks is definetly too early for their vacs! I would have mine done at 10 & 12 weeks. They should have immunity from their mum upto 10 weeks old.
I would hold off on the vacinations and get them vet checked the day before they leave for their new homes.

Agree with that totally.

The guide dog people get their pups out as early as poss to socialise them as much as possible before they have time to become afraid of new sights and sounds, it works very well for them and I agree entirely with the way they work.
Also agree I would never vac a pup at 6 weeks absolutely no need they have mum's antibodies, and it can render the vaccine inactive giving it that early.
Most vets would recommend first vaccine from 8 weeks, I've never met a vet who would ever want to give a vaccine at 6 weeks unless under special circumstances.
Breeders will generally give their pups the first vaccine from 8 weeks and that is the best time for the vet check just before leaving for their new homes and the new owners then have the second vaccine at their own vets a couple of weeks later. (Though different vets may use different vaccines which can cause problems and many breeders now don't vaccinate the pups to avoid the pups having to start the programme all over again) On collection the pup I agree should be registered at the new owners vet and also have a check over within 48 hours of purchase.
I absoutely would not have my pups vaccinated at 6 weeks!
Interesting, that was my first reaction when she said 6 weeks, wow that's early but she said there was 3 weeks between first and second and that them having the second part with their new owners was fine whatever the make of product. I believe the product they use is Schering Plough Procyon.
I wasnt going to do first vac but all the new owners requested it be done, i did give them the option.
See, now i am confused!

Sounds like she is just trying to take money off you. They new owners can take the pups to their vets when they get them - I believe you should always get a new pup vet checked the week you buy it.
I would agree but she makes no more money if i take them at 6 or 8 weeks, the second part will be due when they are with their new owners. I think i will go with doing it just before they are collected at 8 weeks.
I will explain to all the owners. All my previous dogs were done at 8 weeks but she said they do it from 6 with this vaccine.

Breeders do not normally do the vaccinations though so it is odd (to me anyway) that the vet is encouraging you to do it. My boys did not get their first one until they were 9 weeks then they had the second at 11.
the second part will be due when they are with their new owners.
I definitely wouldn't vaccinate unless I still have pups at 9-10 weeks. I've not know a new owners' vet be happy to give just the second part of the vaccination. They all appear to want to give the complete course again, which means that the pups received 3 vaccination within a few weeks. :(

As others have pointed out this is what the Guide Dogs for the Blind find works best for their puppies and I think it is sometimes recommended for kennel reared puppies so really just another way of doing things but it is less common for breeders to follow this course so perhaps surprising that your vet has recommended it.

Can only go off what my vet does, I vaccinate at 6 weeks always have and dad before me but vet will not give second vaccine until 10 weeks because of mums immune system after 10 weeks if you have first one done there must be 3 weeks in between then one more week after second injection if this is correct can't say if it is or isn't surely pups only going out for 1st ime at 14 weeks is a little late socialising etc.

Well my pups were carried outside until their vaccinations kicked in - so they were socialised well enough by the time they could walk outside. Now they are bombproof and unfased by anything.
My puppies are vet checked at 6-7 weeks when they are microchipped, the new owners are advised to see their vet within 72 hours of collecting the pup ( minimum age for colection 8 weeks). Different vets use different vaccines so I prefer the new owners to arrange the injections with their own vet. In their puppy packs they receive information about immunity etc.
i dont vacc till 7weeks my vet wouldnt do them at 6weeks he says to early .....also mum needs to have stopped feeding them for about a week or more before vacs done ....
they still have mum antibodies and it might not work !!

Some will some won't, that is why it needs to be repeated :-) There is more information
here.

My puppies were done at 7 and 10 weeks, but as toys they don't go to their homes until 10 weeks anyway, so I was happy to have the vaccs done so the owners wouldn't have to wait as long before continuing the socialisation I'd started by carrying them around. :-)

I get my done at 7 and 10 weeks (2nd if pups still with me, or the ones I am keeping) I won't let a pup go without first vaccine, and advise new owners of the vaccine my vet uses so they can make their vet aware, or find a vet who uses the same protocol. They are Vet checked at the first vaccination, and never had a problem or any new owners have a problem with the delay between check and going to new owner's vet. I know lots of people here are happy with the Mum's immunity covering for this early period, but I like to make sure hte course is started and the pup's have the initial shot, as recomended by my Vet now, and my previous vet.

my pups go at a minimum of 8 weeks.and not before.
i vaccinate at just before 8 weeks so pups can all settle down comfy before being taken.my vet wont do vaccines until they are at least 7 weeks.id also get the health check done 48 hours before they leave and advise they have their vet check them over in the next 72 hours.i think 6 weeks is too early for vaccines.i would get the health check done at the same time as the vaccines at 7-8 weeks.
just my opinion.x

My vet vaccinates at 8 and 12 wks and I take them to be checked over the day before they leave me, the only time I vaccinate pups is if they are staying longer than the 8wks as some vets use different vacs and then advises the new owners that jags have to be done again.
