Topic Dog Boards / General / HELP Dog eating cat poo
- By Tricolours [gb] Date 17.02.09 20:54 UTC
My friends jack russel keeps eating cat poo out of the cat tray, she tells her dog off but it still does it, can anyone help please.

It's a delightful little treat and given the chance I reckon all dogs would have a nibble, my young ones will still eat their own and any one elses that's going  :(  They'll eat my cats too given the chance :(

It's a disgusting but natural thing that some dogs enjoy more than others, as long as the cat is healthy and regularly wormed I would just suggest strong vigilance in emptying the tray although I realise that's easier said than done.
Happy poo tray monitoring :-D

I would try and prevent this as I think that cat litter is dangerous (poisonous?) to dogs.
Mine has from time to time eaten some cat poo he has found whilst out the back of my house with no ill effects, other than bad breath :)

Cat food is higher protein than commercial dog food, and the waste is also relatively high in protein - and therefore attractive to dogs. The only cure, once they've discovered it, is to make sure the cat's litter tray is inaccessible to the dog!

Yes just to reiterate what others have said: you cannot really train a dog not to do this, but cat litter IS dangerous. Personally I use baby gates. My litter trays are all in the utility room with a baby gate across the door. I did have a bitch once get seriously ill from eating cat litter. (Let's face it, it sticks to the poo so you cannot prevent it being eaten.) I've also heard of dogs dying from eating cat litter.

its a revolting thing worse when they kiss you afterwards if you didnt know they had been in the cats box.One of my boxer boys used to do this his head would go through the flap on the box every time he passed it to cure him we used a plant water sprayer set on the setting where it comes out as a shoot of water rather than spray every time he hovered near the litter box he got a shot of water, then the Boston started so she got the same treatment she isnt bothered about it now thankfully.

Cats climb..dogs dont tend to...put the litter tray up higher. The cat will manage just fine and the dog doesn't get the Kitty Caviar (as we call it in this house). :-)

When i first got my shih tzu she would eat any poo. It was really worrying as she would find dog poo on the beach where other people hadnt picked it up and eat it before we could get to her. Thankfully we have now trained her out of that but she will still eat cat poo, no amount of training has broken that nasty habit :-p We dont have a litter tray in the house though so all her "kitty truffles" come from the garden. My other dogs dont touch it at all. I heard before that short faced breeds are the most likely to eat poo but not sure if that is just a myth.

As other say, if they have access when you are not around or not watching, you can't really do anything about it.  It's possible to teach a reliable leave so that when you are aound, you can ask the dog to leave and reward the dog for doing so.  Telling the dog off really won't work, cat poo is yummy to most dogs and appear to be a high value tasty teat :-D so it's very rewarding for them.

I would change the cat litter to wood chip bassed litter if it isn't already what she uses which is safe and pu the litter trays in a place or high away from where the dog can get to them.

I have a gate on the stairs and the litter trays on the landing so cats can tinkle without the worry of a dogs head poking through the tray door, plus of course keeping it free from no2 as soon as!!

Mine eats it too and usually dabs some behind her ears.  All the better if it belongs to a fox.  :-(

Ours gorge on it when they get the chance too.  I hate it, they bloomin stink to high heaven.  The bottom of our garden is like a cat loo, and even though we check it regularly, the dogs will always find some hidden away somewhere.  The same with my mil's garden (behind her trees).

Has anyone used those sonic cat deterrent thingies?  I would invest in one if I knew it would work.

My GSD is a s**t gobbler, just got to keep litter tray out of reach, but she still finds it in the garden, and the Daxis if I dont get out there and clean up straight away.
