A woman called and wants to bring her CKCS to eye testing. I told her would need to bring her KC reg, and she told me she has not got that, I asked if the breeder of her bitch had it. She told me the breeders dogs were not registered either, and she is planning on breeding from this bitch and registering the puppies with the Dog Lovers Register instead. So she will be bringing with her the dogs pedigree, and details of it's microchip number.

Does this dog go through the BVA scheme which I thought was for KC/ISDS registered dogs only? Or does she get charged the same fees but not go through the BVA test? If she doesn't go through the BVA test should she given anything to say her dog has been eye tested?

Also thinking ahead to 2010, what happens if a dog comes to eye testing and for whatever reason the scanners cannot find the microchip or read it? Should the dog be turned away? Should we still test the dog and with hold the certificate? Or suppose the dog is tattooed but we cannot read the tattoo? Should this dog be turned away? Should a certificate be completed but with held?

Personally I don't see why she can't get her dog tested with verification of microchip against its Petlog registration, make the same charge but supply with a Vet letter on headed  paper or something similar, with stamp on pedigree or Petlog reg doc, showing the results for the dog  tested.  Then ensure she's advised of other tests appropriate for the breed before she goes ahead with any planned matings, she can't be stopped and my cynical head would be like what is she going to breed it with and how much extra will it cost her buyers for a puppy?

Failed ID would be advising a return visit for eye testing at a later date once the ID situation was resolved, without DNA profiling you couldn't be sure that the animal returned was the one you actually tested if say it was re tattooed as most vets don't offer that service, microchip would be easier to sort out.

Hip scoring can be done for any dog, registered or not, so I'd be surprised if eye testing was any different.

This document confirms that any dog including crossbreeds can be tested, but further down it asks for relevant owner registration certificates. A closer look at it might be of benefit.

Hmm, link doesn't work properly, so you'll have to click on the menu to find the eye scheme.

I have had other dogs at eye testing before who were not KC registered but I was thinking more about 2010 and also whether for this year she would need to have a vets letter to attend? I have always asked not KC reg dogs to provide a letter from their vet as the eye testing in a veterinary referral service.
