Metaphyseal Osteopathy I think other wise called HOD ( hypertrophic osteopathy) I have been looking it up and it is a common(ish) thing is large to giant breeds. However we have a terrier pup about 8 weeks old who is showing signs. He was at the vet this afternoon and this is the initial diagnosis. He is to get x-rays tomorrow. Both the front legs are swollen and sore just about the knee joints. He is very stiff in walking. His appetite thus far is good but he had a fever of 104.5 .
What is the prognosis for HOD? And has anyone had a small breed puppy with it? and he has two brothers ...will they be at risk as well? They came to us at 6 weeks and have had a parvo only jab. They were to get the L&P this week but have kennel cough. (Affected pup is coughing only occasionally brothers are worse). I keep reading stories of dogs who die but can't find much on recovery or long term effects on growth or health. Is it a stage they grow out of?
This puppy has a potential home but we would not be happy letting him go if he will have long term problems. ( I have taken a shine to him so he is at my house with my gang while he is assessed)
I know my friends dog (Leonberger) had this (she's Madleo on here) and that was straight after the parvo injection. I will pm her email if you like? Her dog was vaccinated at either the 12 week? period or the yearly booster when it happened
Would be great to get more info. the poor wee mite is so sore. He is only a little terrier and no one I know has heard of it it such a small type puppy. Both his knees are swollen and he can barely stand to go to the toilet. I feel so bad for him. he is home after the x-ray today on Meloxidyl only .His little tail never stops and he is a happy thing. Says a lot about his temperament I think.
If she would pm me that would be great. Would want to know if I have to watch out for his back legs as well and how long he could be in pain for. We had to cancel his new home (thankfully there was one of his brothers still available). But he is home with me getting spoiled rotten. We did not want to re-home him in the condition he is in. I know his activity has to be limited and he is doing a good job of that on his own. I know they get fevers....How do I know when to worry? I don't want to leave it too late if he needs help.
From what I can remember, her dog had it in just the front legs, the poor girl was in so much pain - she couldn't stand let alone walk :( they swelled up to twice the size. I have sent you her email address :)
