On Wednesday morning I woke up and found that my Samoyed had been very ill overnight with terrible dire rear. I starved her for 24hrs and fed her yesterday two small meals of boiled white rice and white fish. She is thankfully back to normal now (I checked her poo this morning - neighbours must think I'm potty!!)

However last night my Cavalier woke me up needing to go outside, she now has the awful runs which is very unusual for her, Ive never seen her have the runs ever! She is very upset as obviously her tummy is hurting and her bum is a bit sore :-( Feel so sorry for her. Im going to do the same starving (I feel like such a mean mummy!) and keep a close eye on her today.

My question is, has anyone else experienced the same with their dogs?! Its almost like a 24 hour tummy bug? I really dont think they could have eaten anything to make them like this - they're in the house nearly all the time and I watch them closely on walks, and I cant see how anything could have got in to our garden that they could have eaten. They have only been in contact with one other dog in the past few days, but the other dog has been fine as I went to see him yesterday and he's not been ill at all. All our dogs are fed exactly the same as well and dont get any treats or leftovers.

Also, our other dog has been absolutely fine - but she does tend to have a cast iron stomach anyway. Its really strange! I would be interested to hear from anyone else whose dogs have had symptoms like these.

mine have had what can only be described as 24 hour bugs before - I couldn't explain the causes either and it's happened a few times over many years and several dogs.  So long as the fasting treatment and bland diet clears things up I'd not be overly alarmed.

My vet suggested that possibly a bird or small animal dropped food stuff into the garden that I didn't know about which is a definite possibility - I've found dried up baguettes, pie crust, unidentifiable 'hip joints' before and they certainly didn't originate from the house :-p  

One time at our static caravan I found a large crab on the decking (ugh) presumably too heavy for the seagull or whatever that was shopping for lunch (we're very near the beach but not SO near the crab made the journey on it's own LOL)

Hopefully they're both on the mend and it's just one of those unexplained glitches :)

Fortunately by the next day she was much better infact nearly right again.I then offered her chicken and scramlble egg and a bit of rice.
It was quite strange because my gsd didn't get it thank goodness, unless it was something she had eaten having perhaps got hold of something while we were out and I didn't see her.
I supose we get them as well sometimes too.

Furriefriends, thats exactly what my two have had, my poor little Cav has never had the runs before and doesn't know what's going on - bless her :-( The white fish and boiled rice has worked a treat for my Sammy though so I shall try that with the Cav and avoid the look in her her big brown "Mummy I'm staaaarving" eyes tonight !!

On the plus side though (always have to think of positives) - it has given me an excuse to open up my Christmas pressies - a blaster and a grooming table, and use them on the dogs. My OH looked slightly horrified when he returned from a trip abroad to find that the kitchen had been transformed into a dog grooming parlour. :-D

We have a small dog room and it's fantastic for putting the dogs in until they're dry...you do really notice especially at this time of year. I want to extend our dog room as its not big enough to accomodate said blaster and grooming table !!

Anyway back on topic -- do you think it will be ok for me to take my two for a walk with other dogs tomorrow, or would you leave them a few more days just to make sure ??

Mia had the tummy bug on Tuesday bear in mind she is a toy dog and I admitt that she does not get a conventional walk everyday anyway I would not have taken her out on Wednesday but my friend who has her on Thursday when we are all out walked her on lead to her house on Thursday  I would have walked her lead that day anyway as she seemed well and poos back to a soft normal (now fine) and today I took both dogs out to the woods. Mia was really back to her normal springy self by thursday. Others may think differently.
btw she is eating enough for amedium size dog atm to make up for it all !

Think oh thinks that room is called the kitchen or was that the other way up!

Just a quick update, both my girlies are back to normal now, thank goodness. They do like to worry me occasionally :-)

The white fish and boiled rice combo seems to have worked a treat and the dogs love it. I cancelled yesterdays walk - I organise a dog walking club with our friends and their dogs and had arranged a walk for yesterday, but thought it would be better if we waited until my two are 100% better, I'd feel awful if other peoples dogs got the bug too.

Hope it doesn't ever come back !! Ive never had to do so many bottom washes !! :-O

Thats good, I think I would have cancelled the group dog walk too under the circumstances. All the best

AliceC notice that you only live in Cheshire, I woke up this morning to a lovely brown mixture all over my kitchen.  Haven't a clue which dog has done it or if it's all three, but again my dogs never have dicky tummies so was quite a shock for me.  All seem fine though they didn't bark to go out this morning which is unusual for them. 

Oh no - where abouts are you?! I really think its a nasty bug that has been going around - I hope your dog (whoever was the culprit!) is feeling better again soon. A "lovely brown mixture" is exactly what was in my kitchen the other day! So strange as my other dog has been totally unaffected!!

It doesnt account for me I am in Surrey. must be another nasty bug causing horrible brown messes !

So glad to hear it. Mine are fine now thank you, back to their normal selves. Its a strange bug...my hairdresser's Dobe had it on Wednesday as well, but his other 2 dogs were fine. Bizarre.

We seem to have a tummy bug going around where i live (West Midalnds).  So far i know of 3 dogs which have had the sickness and runs lol cannot spell the other word.  I had to take my BC to the vets on Monday as he had blood in his stools he was totally of his food which is not like him at all he has had the runs a few times as he seems to have a sensitive tum but has never been of his food so i knew this was serious. He is fine now though and all the other dog owners have said that is why they had to take there dogs to the vets.  My Bc does not eat food when out but he does drink from stagnent water.

Mspoppy, I hope your boy gets better soon. I definitely think its some kind of strange bug that's been doing its rounds around the UK.

Someone in my breed in Somerset says that her girl is suffering with this too.  I wonder what it is?

I'd love to know if anyone finds out...
