Topic Dog Boards / General / Lack of Bins

I am truely gob smacked at the lack of Bins our small town has. Of course when my dog hasn't done a Poop I walk past at least one bin which incidently was really for rubbish but had a half peeled off sticker on it saying 'your dog mess may be put in this bin if it is properly wrapped'.
About 2 streets later my lovely little pup decides yes she'll have one now. Another 3 streets to the school to fetch my lad out and a carry on up and round in a circle back round again and no bins! I ended up walking a total of 10 quite long streets home and disposing of Mileys poo in our bin. Now this is fair enough I'm not adverse to carrying my dogs poop around in it's bag in fact in this weather it gives off a little welcome heat (lol) but it's no wonder I'm constantly telling my children to 'Mind that dog poo' because others obviousely aren't that willing to pick up their dogs poo and carry it all the way home!!!!!!
Rant over, thankyou for reading! lol

Quite agree, we have a large field nearby used by dog walkers, but with only one bin.  What really annoys me is that people pick up the poo but promptly throw the whole bag in the hedge because they can't be bothered walking to the one and only bin.  So apparently poo hanging from trees in non-biodegradable bags is better than leaving poo on the floor....................must admit, it can look strangely festive if you squint hard enough!

You could be talking of my town too, how councils have the audacity to talk of fines for not scooping the poop when they don't supply enough poop bins is beyond me.
When we holiday in Cornwall you will find loads of bins, even down lanes of tiny little villages, if the councils there can do it on their tight budgets how come the bigger towns like mine can't?

As for poo bag decorating in trees and hedges well that can only be the action of people that have 'poo for brains'! One of my dad's expression only he didn't used to say 'poo' :-o

On the weekend I take my dogs to a common area that is over 800 acres in size.  It is extremely popular with dog walkers; in fact I'd say over 80% of the people that use the common are there with their dogs.  There is exactly one bin for dog waste in the car park.

I simply do not understand the psychology of it; but some people bag their dog's poo and then leave the plastic bags hanging from a tree or shrub.  So last weekend there was a notice in the car park asking people to do not to do that but to dispose it in the (always overflowing) bin.  It actually made me angry because you would think that the management of the common would have enough sense to install more dog waste bins if they wanted to encourage good behaviour.

That said, most people do not bother with picking up poo because it is a huge area with a bridle path through most of it.  I guess people figure that if horses can leave huge deposits right in the middle of the path that a small pile of dog waste in the woods is not a big deal.

I think the moral of the story is if you want people to pick up after their dogs than the council needs to provide enough bins.

I can see you issue with not having enough poo bins around, but all the same it doesn't take much to walk with the bag in your hand until you get to one.

I know some of my friends will either kick the poo out the way or pick it up and hang the bags somewhere saying they will pick the bag up on the way home(which they do if we walk back that way).
They think i'm funny as i'll happily walk for a good hour with a bag of poo until we reach a bin.
To me carrying the poo until you reach a bin or take it home with you is being responsible, to leave it on the side or to leave the bag is IMO not good enough.

We have that in some of the areas we walk, the mess thats left behind its aweful and i have complained to the council, it really doesn't take much to walk about with the bag in your hand. Why do people think its a problem to di this? Even my friends can't answer this. If i see them leave a bag i pick it up, if they fail to pick up their dogs poo i pick it up. They have very shocked looks on their faces when i do this.

I agree.  I think we also need to remember that there are costs attached to emptying bins which are obviously influenced by how easily accessable to the necessary vehicles they are.  It is unlikely in present times that councils are going to want to increase their costs on such things not to mention the environmental impact.

I contacted my council and asked for doggy bins in a cetain area where we walk they took the details and said they would do a survey of the area and if they required it they would place bins accordingly within a week we had ''4'' doggy bins ta dah!!

give them a call you can only ask..

i agree its down to money. not cost of bins but the blokes in the lorry collecting it. my area has been reduced to 1 dog poo van so all the bins are now at exits to make getting the van to the bin easy. thats probably why they only have one bin in a car park and none on the green area, its so the guy doesnt have to walk too far to the bin!

I don't mind walking with my dog poo like I say and I always take 3 or 4 bags out with me and if I have spare and i see a pile off poo I do sometimes pick it up even tho it is someone elses dog mess. You see I'd rather do that than have to scrape my childrens shoes. You can bet your life if there's poo anywhere, one of mine will stand in it.
I walked past a council dog poo bin a few weeks ago and it was full to overflowing with maybe 20 on the floor around it, surely it costs less for the council to empty these bins than to send out a doggy doo patrol warden who is suppose to hand out on the spot fines? :)

exactly, i emailed our council this week about lack of bins. i live very close to tredegar house and the path to get there is used by 10 to 15 dogwalkers .most pick up up the mess, and take it home, but some just put the full bags in the woods which is enroute. there is not one bin along this route so i askedd the council could it be considered.the reply was a straight no. the reason being that people set fire and vandalise the bins(how do the cuncil know this as there has never been bins along here.) local authorites seem to have bad attitude towards dog owners recently.:-(

We have the 'dog poo' bins and the litter bins but we also have a couple of bins that are for both! They look like the usual litter bins but have a sign on them that says something along the lines of 'you can put your dog poo in here' which makes me wonder if everything goes intogether on the back of the lorry that goes around emptying the bins. Here, I feel there is a lack of poo bins around the town where people walk there dogs, they all seem to be at the parks, woods or at the beach and not everyone takes their dogs there.

Bins are few and far between where we live, I just carry mine home - however in Sutton Park where I walk most afternoons there are lots but we also do a lot of walks in Cannock Chase and I have never ever seen one bin there :o)

I bring mine home to,but the authorites made it law that you got to pick up the mess (i always done this anyway and so have a lot of owners) but they are the ones who wont supply the bins.like ive said most oners pick up the mess but dump the bags out of sight because they dont like carrying the mess around with them. if bins were put along this route these owners would be more inclined to use the bins instead of the wooded area.after all they made the effort to pick it up in the first place.the reply i had of our council held no water with me,and i think its all about money saving.
