I will try to keep as short as possible! Hazel (my 4 ½ year old Cavalier Spaniel) hurt her back jumping in my new car last August. Her front feet made it in to the boot but her back legs slipped on the wet bumper and she slipped and yelped. I caught her so she didn't fall. (She is no longer allowed to jump in or out of my car; you learn by your mistakes as they say!)
I took her to the vets and she was made to rest for two weeks and put on painkillers. I did exactly as the vets recommended and she was absolutely fine until last Monday when we were about to go to bed she jumped down from the sofa and yelped. I rested her completely again as she seemed miserable for a few days and if I picked her up she yelped. I took her back to the vets who checked her all over and she didn't yelp or complain once with him! He couldn't find anything really wrong so rest and painkillers again and then x-rays in a couple of weeks at the same time as she has her teeth cleaned and hopefully recovered a little.
We are agility mad and he said as this is the second time in 6 months it maybe that agility will have to be stopped as it could be aggravating the injury. I'm really disappointed and feel guilty that I may be doing too much with her. I would never carry on with agility if it caused her any pain; she absolutely loves doing agility and has never shown any signs of pain while training. I love her to bits and as she is my first dog I'm learning lots. We will wait for the results from the x-ray and then decide what to do for the best.
Do any of you wonderful people have any advise or been in the same situation? Is there anything I can give her to help her or is it just a lot of rest and TLC and calming things down on the exercise front? I just wanted to tell someone and get some advise, if possible, and try not to get too uptight before our next visit to the vets. She does seem a lot brighter today and I can pick her up with no complaints but is that just the painkillers kicking in?
