I have got my little crested baby . Not how I planned though and sooner than expected. He is approx 16 weeks old and is hairless but has a few spots. I dont think h had been bathed or moisturised before I got him so have washed him and exfoliated him with clean and clear exfoliating daily wash (oil free) from johnson & johnson. I have moisturised him with e45 lotion. I hope these products are ok. I have looked on crested web sites and other places and although they say they should be moisturised they dont say what sort of lotion to buy. I have been washing him in baby shampoo is that ok or do I need dog shampoo. He hadnt had any vacs when I got him was nearly tw0 weeks ago. I have taken him for his first one and he has to go back in three weeks for his last one. He had no idea about house training but is getting better now. I would be grateful for some advice on care and may be able to e mail some pics if you drop me your email address.

surely the breeder of your puppy, such a specialist breed, is the person to ask these important questions?

Perhaps someone experienced will come along but if not and he has not come from a breeder that is able to help you, you could try contacting the Breed Club for advise.

i think it is better to ask on a forum as well as the breeder to get a wide variety of answers as what works for one dosent work for another. my freind has a hairless chinese crested girl 4 year old (pet) called pandora i will phone her later and ask what she uses.

hope someone else comes on in the meantime who is more knowledgable (spelling) to help

All I know is that you should use the same brand of product for moisturising, exfoliating, shampooing etc I've PM'd a breeders site to you & you could ask her about skin care. I'm sure she'll be able to help you

Funny - I feel exactly the opposite. :)  If I have a question I always ask someone who I know has experience and I can trust.  I would hope that an owner would trust their breeder to have bought a puppy from them?  Another reason, I suppose, to buy a puppy from an experienced breeder rather than someone who has had a litter from a pet bitch.

You never know who is answering on forums.  Answers often show the confidence of ignorance to those who have knowledge. :)

by the description of the pup it dosent sound like he/she come from a reputable breeder so i think if the breeder dosent come up with anything somebody with knowledge of this breed can answer and point the op in the right direction. although yes the breeder would be the first port of call but in some cases this may not be possibe

We always used Johnstones baby shampoo and lotion on our cresteds. I would worry that clean and clear would be too harsh but if it works fine :-)

Spots are perfectly normal as are blackheads, both are minimised though by daily washing and moisturising. In this weather your crested will need a jumper to keep warm, ours always liked a heat pad in the winter too.

a lot of crestie puppies get puppy acne,
i use either a puppy shampoo or baby shampoo
some react to baby products
aloe vera shampoo from health shop is ok too
don,t get anything heavely perfumed
and they say avoid anything with  lanolin in.
i also use pure aloe vera lotion or gel for the skin
from a health shop
or have used E45 too
so many use differant produces
i stuck with breeder recommended stuff
pm  me if you like

Hi all thanks for the help. I agree I would have asked the breeder but I didnt get him from a breeder. A friend of mine knew someone that had got a crestie and they wanted a home for him. I arranged to go and see him at his home in Enfield. The house he came from was a complete tip and there were too many children to count. The guy didnt even know what food he had been having just something from a tin. He had not had any vacs yet was being walked and he only roughly guessed his age to be about 16 weeks. The kids had also cut of his crest from his head and face although I dont think he had much to start with. He hasnt got much hair anywhere and it is very sparse even round his feet. The children had also drawn on his skin with biro which I have managed to wash off.  I couldnt leave him there and so I paid up and left. I think he had been bought as a christmas present and when they realised it was harder work than they thought and not just a toy to play with they decided to get rid. I did ask about the breeder he came from but was just told it was a friend of a friend and he did have papers but they didnt get them as was much cheaper without.
He sleeps with me and is like a little hot water bottle. I have only been washing him once a week I have had him nearly two weeks now. Someone said he needs to be bathed daily would this be the case? If he hasnt got much hair on his feet or head will it grow or would it already be long at his age?

Have you got him insured ?
I am just thinking ( in my usual pessimistic way ) that IF he hasn't come from a good breeder he may have health problems in the future  so it might be best to get him covered .
Also , maybe weigh him and check that he is what he should be .
Oh bless him , he has obviously got a lovely home with you now !

Poor little crestie, glad you have got him now. I am sure people on here will be able to help you bring out his full looks and character. I have never owned a crestie actually only met them in the flesh at discover dogs but can see the appeal.

I was thinking about insurance. I dont usually insure my dogs as I find that the amount of premiums would be more than any vet bills over the life of the animal but because this is a bit of a specialist breed and with an unknown history maybe I will.
He is such a little cuddle giver and just wants to stay on my lap as much as he can. He is quite a feisty little thing and sticks up for himself. I was a bit worried how he would react to our rottie but he wrinkled his little nose up and showed his teeth when the rottie was a bit too pushy and scared the big wuss off. He can jump and climb really well too and managed to get over all my baby gates the little monster. The only thing he is not happy about is being left and crys the whole time. We took the other dogs out on Sunday and the neighbour was waiting when we got back to have a moan so am a bit worried about leaving him when I go to work.

OMG
who ever bred him  sounds just a BYB
only interested in the money not the home
and a good breeder will not charge more to have dogs papers either
thank fully he is now in a good home
i only bath my 2 once a week, unless they get dirty
too much bathing will dry out his skin
same as too much cream, oil  etc will block his pores
he sounds like a true hairless, so will be easy to care for
TH do not have a lot of furnishings

they climb and jump  very well, lol
like cats
and love human company
try leaving a radio on when you go out
