Topic Dog Boards / Health / Lepto for first time

Really concerned,  just got back from the vet.  Original Vet retired and new Dr. gave Henry Lepto for the first time.  He is a 9 yr old minature dachshund.  I called the vet and I'm waiting for a call back.  What should I watch for how long before I'll know if he's going to have a reaction and what can be done if he has a reaction?

You have several replies regarding this on this other thread  If you been to the vets again today and spoken to them I do not understand why  you are still worried.

I'm curious as to why he hasn't had a lepto vaccine before? It's always in the puppy course, and is given every year thereafter.

If there has been no reaction after 24 hours (and your original post was three days ago) there won't be.

You mean you got back from ANOTHER appointment, yet you're still asking the same question with ANOTHER dog? Find that hard to believe I'm afraid!

Sorry, Admin advised to move post to this area.  Yes everything is fine.  Found another site that gave the worst case scenario which would be swelling of the airways and suffocation, which would have happened within the first few hours and secondly, swelling around the site, face & muzzle area, which can be treated with Benadryl.
The breeder was adamant about not giving the Lepto, so I complied.  thanks for your response.

Consider this a dead issue.

To be perfectly honest Lepto would be the one I would almost beg the Vet for! The others are usually able to provide protection for 2-3 years(after an earlier initial full course) and a titre level should confirm this...Lefto is the one that doesn't provide cover fopr any length of time and I would wonder about the reasons of the Breeder warning against giving it? I would certainly reccomend my puppy buyers to give it!

I would always give a lepto vacc to my dogs, all mine have had it every year and never suffered a problem. Its not worth the risk imo as i see hundreds of dogs get give an lepto vaccine and i don't think i've ever seen a reaction in the 5 years i've worked there.

Me too, my family has seen what Leptospirosis can do at first hand - (see other thread) I just wouldn't want to take the risk. Plus the fact that our Dogues are out in the fields every day and they always jump in the stream. You wouldn't believe just how many rats there are around us, they're a very successful species. And did you know that if an infected rat pees in water, the Lepto bacteria it sheds can last for 28 days!!

So in the absence of any adverse reactions ever, I'll keep right on giving it, and recommending our puppy buyers to have it too.

I did see an article that said that a Harlequin Great Dane had died due to the Lepto vaccination and that blue merle dogs can be susceptible to a reaction.  Having a blue merle sheltie I discussed this with my vet.  She said its swings and roundabouts, you take the chance of your dog getting Lepto or the reaction which do you go for?  Could explain why the breeder was against the vaccination though.

> Having a blue merle sheltie

My mum's last three dogs were blue merle Shelties and none of them ever had any reaction to the vaccine. I suppose you have to weigh up the risks and make your choice. I feel that bad reactions are relatively uncommon, whereas Leptospirosis itself is usually fatal. After all you can't keep your dog alive in the ITU while the treatment kicks in as you might for a human, but you may well be able to treat a reaction to the vaccine.
