- By diggersdad [gb] Date 10.02.09 10:22 UTC
for the last 3 yrs ive been giving my dogs sardines in tomato sauce, and it hasnt hurt them so far but looking on another site ,it said they poisoness.is this true because years ago a newspaper article said giiving tomatoe sauce with dog food stops dog wee burning your grass, and to be honest since giving the dogs the sard in tom their are no burns on the grass.i know that tomato plants contain poisoness chemicals, but not the tomato itself.when i mentioned the sard in tom to the vet a couple of years ago he couldnt see a problem either so i just need advice. ps they wont touch the ones in oil.hope to hear from u soon

Never heard of them being bad for dogs , mine have had them for years with no ill effects , have just looked on the net and it says nothing but good about them for dogs  and nothing about them being poisness.

I buy all the tinned fish in tomato sauce for the dogs, given moderately i.e once a week, its never done them any harm. Tomato ketchup contains milk, onion/garlic powder, rice flour and so for the likes of intolerances you should be careful.

the site also states states that raw eggs could cause skeletal problems in dogs .on tomatos it says they can get dilated eyes and a rapid heart beat.they contain atropine which is present in high levels in the plant but much lesser levels in the tomato itself.have a look on www.dolforum.com type in sardines then scroll to the bottom,to bad foods.surprised me with tomato and the raw eggs which i ve always given to my dogs from an early age.

Mine are fed Arden Grange with a little Butchers Tripe to enhance. Every 5th day they have pilchards or sardines in tomato sauce, they also have a raw egg a couple of times a week. They are very healthy. I think it is a case of moderation in all things, being a good maxim.

I once offered them pilchards that were tinned in brine (washed off because of salt), my youngest Flatcoat looked at me with a 'hey, where's my tomato sauce?' expression on her face!  She still ate them though!

Oily fish is great for shiny coats.

It just goes to show you cannot believe everything you read on the www!  Tomatoes are not poisonous.  The vine of the tomato is poisonous.  But you know that already :-)

I think (but haven't got the evidence to hand) that because tomatoes are part of the nightshade family there is a recommendation to avoid them if you have arthiritis.  I assume the same would apply to dogs.  I will have a look later for the evidence.

yes - it doesn't work - maybe it was a typo?

Only green parts of tomatoes cause problems.
I use tinned Sardines in Spring water (35p from Sainsburys in the light blue tin)
:) Hope this helps?
