I think some supermarkets are better than others and it does not look like Tescos are that bothered.  You will generally fair better in Sainsburys.  It is the same with free range chickens although to be fair, my Tescos branch is quite a small one.

I ordered a supermarket shop the other day and its landed on my doorstep now.
I was looking for British meat, from bacon and sausages to other meat produce. I found it very difficult and most of the items which were are the finest/taste the difference ranges, so means more money, i haven't got an issue with paying more, my question is if the meat has to travel and is either flown or shipped in i would of that that would boost the price and the British would be cheaper.

Though i still love German Salami and Spanish Chorizo. Looking at their origin, they actually come from the country which it should originate from.

In relation to eggs, i buy these free range woodland ones, both Tesco and Sainsburys sell them. I have since found out that a farm about 20 mins from my house is where these eggs originate from. They are free range as have seen them. Also in a few months time i should be able to buy direct off the farm, 30 eggs for £2.50. These are the eggs which don't meet the sizing for the shops.

The extra cost is due to the higher welfare accorded.  It simply costs more to produce.  I think the fact that foreign meats can be so cheap despite their transport costs tells you a lot about where savings are being made :-(

Eggs that 'don't make the size' are a great bargain. Our local farm shop has eggs like these, they are often supermarket rejects because they're too big!!

I used to be a complete 'Tesco-ite but I agree with you Isabel they don't seem bothered or rather they like to portray it as concern for their customers who are on tight budget.

More likely it's concern for the share holders and their profit margins.
I think they're getting too big for their boots.

> I was in the big T this afternoon and they had pork belly for sale in their finest range. Seasoned with lemon and pepper. Is was a very small portion that would do well to serve one person after the fat cooked out of it.

Tesco finest is their top of range so is naturally more expensive, tesco value pork belly is still very cheap (£3.99 kg) and you could season it yourself, it does have the 'british quality pork standard' symbol too :-D

I have to say i have bantered between two supermarkets and to be honest i may pay just a little bit more in one than the other, but the quality i have found is better and also the service is up there.

Though i wish i had the money for my big shops in Waitrose and M&S, yummy yummy food in those places.

Again both my local Tesco stores stock British free range chickens, ordinary ones and corn fed ones. Even the Value chickens now say British on them. Any meat I've looked for in there I've found a British version with the relevant quality symbol, like the SQBL (Scotch quality beef and lamb).

My little Tescos does sell British chickens but it is very rare that they have whole free range chickens.  Sometimes a few legs and bits.

I'm lucky because I've got two tesco superstores near me, well one 3 miles and one 8 miles away. Both always have whole free range british chickens but they're not cheap, £9 odds for the corn fed and just under £8 for ordinary free range - compared to the 3 for £10 ones that don't say exactly where they come from :-(
