Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Milk drying up???
- By peacebabe [gb] Date 08.02.09 21:16 UTC
Any suggestions on what to feed bitch to aid milk production. Pups 2 weeks old on Mon, she's been having JWB dried puppy mixed with puppy pouches about 5 times a day. Her teats just seem to be shrinking, pups getting a bit restless and feeding time has turned into a frenzy! Getting frozen tomorrow to give as well, any other ideas?? Got to be quite carefull about what i give, already been to vets with an upset tummy off butchers puppy tins.
Thanks Aly x

Is she getting enough liquid?

I always soak the dry food almost to mush to ensure they get more than enough water.  It does mean letting them out frequently.

Make sure she's taking in enough liquid; soak her food until it's really sloppy, and give her water with milk or stock added to tempt her to take it. Is the JWB served soaked or dry? That, and the sucking of the puppies, will encourage milk production.

The old breeders used to say red meat to make milk.

Yes I'd be concerned about adequate water intake too. I also feed JWB, with my nursing mothers I always soak it to make sure they are getting enough. I also feed defrosted lean mince, mushed up with some water to encourage them to take more in. Some mums just dont drink enough!
You could also try cooking up some chicken, taking the juices and making a thin broth for her to drink. The juices can be poured into icecube trays and frozen until needed.

Never had a problem this way. However I'd get veterinary advice too, just incase they can suggest something.

That is your answer then.

I put about a pint of water with each 200g of dry food and leave to soak for an hour or two.  Basically as soon as she has eaten one portion I soak the next.

Mien are on four times their normal ration at this stage (with an average litter of 6 - 7)and stay that way until pups are about 5 weeks, then drop to 3 times when weaning almost complete.

I then check the bitches condition and if she is lean she will stay on double rations until she has a nice bit of body.  She will then have the post partum moult starting from about 6 to 8 weeks after whelping and can loose condition so will stay on increased rations until the coat has come back (unless getting actually fat).

Only been 4 hours and already teats are filling up. Been siringing water (only a bit) into her mouth every time i go in kitchen, soaked kibble and added water on top.
Thanks again

Good news. :-) The liquid for the milk has to come from somewhere, so lots to drink (watered-down milk, the water from boiled chicken or fish etc) is vital to keep her hydrated as well as producing milk for the puppies.

Just wanted to say thanks again, she has had "fluid overload" boiled chicken, with pre soaked kibble and broth poured over, diluted goats milk + me siringing water frequently. Just could not see what was stareing me in the face!
