Hi my girl is 6 weeks in whelp and just started to get fatter.Im still feeding her normal amount but wondered when she should go on to the puppy food .
As she is a smallish breed but from the scan is carrying 5 so i am fightened of her getting to fat. Any advice

I woudl put her onto puppy food now but only increase the amounts to around 1 1/2 times normal rations by whelping.

After whelping I feed ad lib 4 times a day.

I would change her onto a good quality puppy food now.  I change mine at about 6 weeks and they have always done alright.  You will probably find she will start to eat smaller amounts now as there gets less and less room in her stomach and might even go off her food altogether so she probably wont get too fat.

My lot never eat smaller amounts and will eat all that comes their way up to and during whelping.They are like their mother not much puts them of their food.hehe

I have been told that putting them on puppy food (the moms that is) only makes fat puppies which are harder to whelp.  I have yet to put my bitches on puppy food, after being told this.  Am adding some cottage cheese though.

Pregnant bitches need slightly more protein than their usual maintenance rations if they're to remain in good health themselves. In the days before complete foods, at about 6 weeks after mating the amount of biscuit was reduced and replaced by meat for this reason. Nowadays, for convenience, you put them onto puppy food instead.

What you don't want is a bitch who's had to deplete her own stored protein (muscle) to form her babies.
