Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Tail Chasing in my GSD

We have a 2½ year old GSD rescue dog. His previous owners parted with him because he is a tail chaser. He doesn't mutilate it, just sits and holds it once caught. I am at home with him and our younger GSD all day. They get about 2+ hours exercise along with training exercises. I have tried a water pistol, tin of stones, training discs, virtually anything that will create a distraction. I have tried ignoring him and walking into another room but once he's started, he's very difficult to stop. A television programme dog trainer suggested putting them on their leads, say nothing, and leading them away. If his tail is already in his mouth and you clip his lead on he will walk holding it.
I have now put him on Valerian and Skullcap tablets as it was suggested this may calm his anxiety. I would be very interested to hear from anyone else who has had this problem and treated it successfully. He is otherwise a very well adjusted dog, who loves people, children, other dogs etc. but this is obviously distressing for him and distressing for me to watch. Your comments will be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum June :-)

Have you tried applying something foul tasting to his tail eg: Vicks Vapour Rub? Friends of mine had a GSD who was a tail chewer and the only thing that discouraged him was Vicks. They also gave him a big teddy to carry around and he used to sit with that in his mouth for hours on end  but at least he left his tail alone. It might not be a cure for you, but it might help break the habit so that you can focus his attention onto something else?

Thanks Leigh. I have tried giving him a large soft toy which deterred him for a while but our younger dog is just over one year old and I'm afraid once they start playing tug of war, it doesn't last long! I haven't tried Vicks Vaporub so this is certainly something I will pursue. Once again, thanks.
