My bitch had her 1st day of her season on 10th January and was standing on 21st. My other bitch came into season 2 weeks later, my first bitch now has no swelling and has gone back to normal. Today my male has managed to mate with the first bitch accidentally. What do you think the chances of a litter are at this stage (day 29 of her season) as I do not want any puppies but do not want to have her injected?? This is the first time this has happened in 10 years of owning dogs and bitches and I feel gutted! Please help!
Oh dear - it is quite possible that she may take from this late mating. I have had a bitch stop her season and restart a couple of weeks later, this I'm sure was caused by my other bitch coming into season. I think there is a test that you can do to see if she's ovulated. Search on champdogs as there was thread fairly recently on missmatings. My thoughts would be that rather than risk an unwanted pregnancy would be to have the injection to be safe. My friend's bitch had the injection when one of her's was caught by her boy and she was none the worse for having the injection. I would give your vet a call asap.
hi sweetpea ,if your girl stud for him then theres every chance of pups ,the only way is to get her to the vets for the injection ,as ive never known a bitch to stand for male if shes not ready ,imo x
Thank you so much for your quick replies. It's ironic as she was planned to be speyed in 3 months time too. I will talk to my vet Monday and see if he can do any tests then I'll take it from there.

If you planned to get her speyed why not do it now and stop the pregnacy at the same time?
> If you planned to get her speyed why not do it now and stop the pregnacy at the same time?
yes i agree you got there before me ;-) that way you dont actually need to know about if there were any pups growing, for your mind to be clear if she was booked to be speyed id do this in your situation.xx
Is it not too soon after her season? I thought there was an increased risk if it was too close? It is still an option though, thank you. I am really confused and not sure what to do. It will be either spey or injection then spey.

It is preferd to spay 3 months after a season but I was lead to believ that sbecause it's easier as insides are smaller or something. But a spey now is still an option. Give your vet a call on monday, as you plan to spey her it seems a waste of time and money to inject then spay rather then just spay.
I will do. Thank you all for your help, it's much appreciated.
i had my last dog spayed just after season as she kept comming in all the time so was difficult to find the right time to spay all the vet said was that it was more difficult as during the season there is more blood flow to that area which can make it a more difficult op. but i opted to have her spayed and she was fine no problems at all so can be done although i suppose it goes on idividual vet. one of my freinds also has the injection on her bitch to stop any pregnancy and she was fine no ill effects i think she had to have 2 injections 24 hours apart.

It's not the ideal time to spay (midway between seasons, and when there is no sign of phantom pregnancy is best) but it can be done at any time. Possibly wait a couple of weeks and then go for it.
Thank you all for your valued advice and being there when I needed to talk!! After a consultation with my vet we have agreed that she is to be speyed in a couple of weeks. He said it was unlikely she was in whelp but not impossible!! Thankfully, she has never had any problems with hormones or phantoms in the past so fingers crossed she should be ok.
