My little pug is just getting her second set of teeth through, her baby ones are still firm, I have heard this can be common with this breed how long would you give before taking to the vet to see about extraction? I presume most of them come loose and drop out themselves after a period of time. Have been giving her chew sticks and oat bones to give her chance to loosen them herself but today they are still pretty firm. Am hoping Gwen will notice this Post. :)

Qwen where are you get a move on girl.!

With most breeds if the baby teeth show no signs of shifting after 6 months you need to consider surgical removal to avoid problems.

Thanks and just to sound completely thick would you just clarify, is that after 6 months of the new teeth coming through or 6 months of age, they've been coming through since she was 4 half months. :)

I always take mine in at 6 months of age for my vet to decide which ones need removing.

From six months of age - the teeth should have changed completely by 6 to 7 months of age.

Do you feed raw marrow bones or raw chicken wings?  They can bring out the puppy teeth.
- By TrishlovesMiley [gb] Date 07.02.09 12:27 UTC
No she doesn't have anything besides her food, kibbles and the odd oat bone, could try them tho. Thankyou all :)

I've not needed to have puppy canines removed in 25 years, including a toy breed that is notorious for retaining them. :)

So if I bought some chicken wings how many would you suggest she had a day? I don't want to upset her tummy, she eats nothing except dog food and the odd crumb dropped by my children. lol

I find that if dogs aren't used to real meat, then they sometimes have to be taught that it's food. :(
I freeze the wings first and then I hold one end, waving it around to encourage them to eat it, hanging on to the end so that if they are enthusiastic, they don't swallow it whole.  I would just feed one every other day until those pesky teeth are gone. :)  My toy breed eats a raw wing about twice a week now.  She has a better mouth than normal for her breed and her teeth are sparkling while other exhibitors struggle to clean their dogs' tiny teeth. :)

Thanks I will definately give it a go. I am eager to see if she does need persuading to eat it because she is a breed renound for eating everything! lol
Thanks west coast. :)

Hi WestCoast, just a quick up date on this thread, I have been and bought some raw chicken wings today. I gave Miley hers at 10 o'clock tonight. She didn't need any persuasion at all to eat it thanks goodnes! I gave our 2 Boxer dogs theirs 2 seconds later........ theirs lasted approx 2 mins......it's now 11.20 pm and Miley is barely half way through it but absolutely enjoying it! Lol. I will give them these 2 or 3 times a week and fingers crossed it will work. Thankyou for the tip. :)

Hi Trish

just for ref purposes really - dogs sometimes bring back up chicken wings (or any raw meat/poultry) initially as their tums aren't used to it.  Over a relatively quick period they are OK but the increased acidity in their tums (to assist digesting bone) is better dealt with IME by giving them wings/thighs or whatever as an early meal rather than a late one or if giving occasionally only then feed a biscuit late at night and early morning to prevent them bringing up bile.

HTH, Teri :)

Thanks for that Teri, I'll take from her what is left, she's taken her time with it so there's over half! That would have been useful to know earlier. Will stop up a bit longer and keep an eye on her....... Thanks again

Lol! How did you know! She's got plenty of space in her crate and 2 lots of bedding to choose from so if she does decide to part company with anything when I'm in bed she should be comfy til morning! I love her bed smelling of Lenor anyway, a good excuse to wash it again! lol :)
- By Teri Date 10.02.09 23:47 UTC
