I would like some feedback on pet insurance. I have to get some for my puppy and there are so many to choose from. Any suggestions? Shirl

hi Shirl ..if you click on the SEARCH button at the top of the forum page and then type in INSURANCE ..it will bring up quite a lot of the past threads about the subject ...have a look at them and then you will maybe have a better idea.
Generally I find that you need to know what YOU want from your insurance and then go and find an insurer that gives you it ;)

Hi Melody, Thanks for the info! That will be a great help. Do you know why my question came up on the guest questions? I'm new at this, so I don't know what I did wrong. :-)

It depends which board you are on when you post ...guest questions are one off questions for people who don't want to register ..maybe you were reading the Guests Questions board when you posted? If you go to the main forum board which shows ALL the different forums you can pick which one to post in
Showing up in General now anyway ;)

Pet Plan and Pet Protect I consider to provide the best cover. Personally I've only had experience of Pet Protect and have been insured with them since 1985. Pet Protect have always honoured claims without question and paid really quickly. They also provided full cover for my 16 yr old Yellow Labrador under there lifetime loyalty scheme and also covered for alternative complementary therapies in the last year, which was brilliant. Hope this helps.

Yell Lab Owner. Thanks for your advise. I have been on the internet reading about all the different insurances. The way I understand it is you get a better deal for the lifetime policy. This I can't do. I'm an American stationed here with my husband and when his tour of duty is up in 3 more years we are going back to the states. And of course my yorkie is coming with me!!! Right on board the plane, in the cabin!!!! :-) I found out today that I will get free 6 months of insurance from the breeder with Pet Plan when I bring my puppy home. Thanks again!!! Shirl

6 months or 6 weeks Shirley? I only got 6wks free with Pet Plan with my puppy when I got her.
I continued the cover with Pet Plan - I have their supreme package, it costs £26 ish per month, but it gives us unlimited vets fees. They also cover an animal for life for any illness so if they become diabetic when they're 4 you can claim for it for the rest of their lives without penalty.
Pet Plan also pay my vets direct so all I ever have to pay is the excess.

Sorry Fiona :-0 Type O!! :-) It's six weeks darlin, sorry!!!! Thanks for your help. I figured it would be easier just to stay with Pet Plan. But I'll keep reading up on the rest for the time being. Shirl

I thought it might have been a typo :) I've never had any problems with Pet Plan and it's the company my vet prefers because they pay so promptly.

With a giant dog all treatment will be more than with a small dog (a yorkie for instance).
Why don't you ask the breeder which company they recommend?
Based on my postcode
Pet Plan would offer their Supreme Plan (unlimited vets fees etc) for £31.25 pcm. I pay £23.95 for a Cocker Spaniel with that plan.
Also, ask your vet which they recommend - some vets accept payment direct from the insurance company which can be a huge bonus if the bill is rather large :)

Lifetime policies do not mean you have to take them out for life, they are annual policies, but cover conditions for the life of the pet.

Thanks Brainless. :-) I misunderstood I guess. Never have been good with insurance policies! Not my cup of tea. Wow, I'm so glad I can get on here and get all this info. It helps me soooo much. Thanks everyone! Shirl

Many insurance plans cover only a certain percentage of the total cost and require you to pay it per visit. Some cover vaccinations and maintenance as well. However, they also charge extra for these added conveniences. In my opinion, it's most practical to adopt a plan that covers against any kind of unexpected ailment, illness, or injury. Especially since vaccinations are usually either a one time thing or an annual thing. No sense in paying for them every month for the dog's life if you only have to pay once a year. Better to pay 250 for a 700 dollars operation and keep your pet instead of having to be forced to pay full price and have to make a decision of whether or not to euthanize your beloved pet or go broke. But like i said, that's only my opinion. Pick a plan that you will be most comfortable with. Make sure you call the insurance company and talk to a person first lest there are catches or caps on certain ailments that the website doesn't list.
I've learned this firsthand with one of my stray cats that i've adopted who was recently mauled by some other animal. Almost had to put him to sleep. Thank God i was able to pay in installments instead. I love my kitty.
