Hi wonder if anyone can give us a bit of advice please? Our Cavalier Freddie went to the vets last Tues and had his anal glands emptied which he certainly didn't like - really yelped . He's 3 yrs old. He wasn't himself at all after this - no wagging tail , no running after toys - just can't be bothered and not himself at all .Anyway my husband then took him back last Sunday and the vet gave him a Rimadyl injection which did seem to boost him for a day or so. Anyway now we are back to square one and have him booked in again tomorrow morning. I've looked on the net and sen several warning s about these injections/tablets so am not too happy for him to have any more. Are there alternatives?  He was fine before his glands were emptied !  Am beginning to get worried .

my best friend used to use rimadyl for his dodgy hips but decide she didnt like it. decided to go the herbal route instead which has worked wonders.
i believe its sometimes used as an anti inflammatory so surely he wouldnt be on it long and has only been given a short course?

Thanks Mahonc. Don't know what will really happen until tomorrow mornings appointment. Vet may not even put him on these tablets.  Do you know what the name of the herbal ones are  please?

yeh the site she gets it from is http://www.csjk9.com/
thinking back actually a lady i sold a pup to uses them also instead of rimadyl for her st bernard.
again not sure why rimadyl was advised in your case as there are other anti inflammatorys out there. you should ask the vet why this one was chosen, there may be a valid reason.
when my youngster had her anal sac emptied it was that compacted she bled so was put on antbiotics for a week (can not remember for the life of me what tho)

Hi Mahonc

Well Freddie has been put on a course of Flexicam (Anti inflamatory). Saw a different today and was much more thorough but bad news is that both his kneecaps are out ! We have got to see how things progress as to whether he has an operation. He is talking in the region of £2,000 !! He also has a weight problem so have to cut his intake by half and give him peas and carrots with it. Vet said as he's put so much weight on in a year since he's been castrated this could be the reason and it might not be the question of overeating but hormone trouble which I have tended to believe all the time. If his weight doesn't improve he'll have to have blood test to check hormones. No wonder the poor boy isn't happy !
