Firstly is she of sufficient quality to be bred from.
Has she done really well at shows so far, (though she is far from mature enough to know how she will finish up).
What is her Hip Score?
Are you a member of the breed club,
http://www.sharpei-clubofgb.co.uk/index.html they will have more specific advice and rules as to age, health tests etc.
Do you have a breed expert or two as mentors to guide you through the choice of stud dogs, who know their ancestors traits etc, and know what you should be striving for with interpreting the breed standard?

I have a bitch who I think is gorgeous and if I ever had any thoughts about breeding her they all vanished once I joined this forum.
Some threads I have read on here have broke my heart, i dont know how to link them for you but there have been recent ones where a poor woman lost all but one puppy and had to travel 200 miles in the middle of the night just to try and save the pup.
Dont mean to sound horrible but Im willing to bet what you have read has no bearing on real life and what could actually go wrong and the actual costs, I have never bred so no, Im in no position to tell you what you do but I wouldnt want to put my bitch through it, let alone myself.

Firstly how old is she? 2nd season I'm thinking she is possibly only a year old. Wait untill she's at least 2 IMO.
You have left it abit late to possibly research a stud dog in time for May unless you have one in mind. We have been thinking for 3 years for our bitch and have on a number of occassions given up on the idea! ;-D
Have you had all her health checks done and is she a good example of the breed? And who has told you this? We all think our bitches are the most gorgous things, of course we do, but be realistic, does she fit the breed standard, does she have alot of things to offer the breed? What are her weak points, and what are the weak points in her lines? For example the bitch not have perfect movement, so you look for a dog with stunning movement. Her temprement might be fantastic but her sires lines and siblings might be slightly nervy so look for a dog who's lines have a solid temprement etc. You have to think of each point and try not to douple up on bad points.
Also buy the book of the bitch for a read. It will give lots of useful information.
Breeding can go either way and be fantastic with no problems, healthy bitch and pups etc, but at the same time it could go horribly wrong.

Hi, she should be left till her 3rd season, or untill she is 2 which would be better for her.
you can contact me for advice if you wish, do you know about the health problems that can crop up in the breed and what to look for in the pedigree.
hi, tia is just 1years old, am waitin till she is 2+ so which would be her 4th. i have looked at all the health prombles with this breed so i know i whould have to take time and alot of questions etc when looking for a stud. as i have had tia since beening six week old but i did look into this breed atleast 5month befor even gettin to no a breeder and when tia was born we went to see her every weekend and did ask alot of question bout her perant etc, which they is no health, skin are eye problems with in the perants history. i do love my dog very much so i do what to do this right, i know they could be any number of problems in pregance just like with anyone person/animal but could also go with out a hitch, this is why everyones help is/could be very helpfull thanks

did the breeder tell you anything about amaloyd & sfs, is your girl endorsed? that will have to be lifted by the breeder, all members of the spcgb have to endorse there puppies when they register them.

sorry just reread my post that should read encorages every one to endorse there puppies.

Umm also worries me that the owner got her at 6 weeks, surely this is to young for a Shar Pei? I know I let my breed go at 7 weeks but never would at 6, that week makes a lot of difference. Have you got her KC paperwork?
yeah i have her kc papers i think it was more of 7 weeks am not sure

i never let mine go till they are 8 weeks, i prefer them to stay that week longer, i know they can go at 7.
Hello, I agree with others on here that 2yrs of age is a more sensible age to be breeding at. With regards problems etc. I suggest you speak with the top kennels in the breed who have bred top quality, healthy dogs. Not the ones who have purchased dogs and done well with them but haven't been able to produce anything of the same calibre, in my opinion if you are breeding then you should be trying to better what you already have.
Shar pei have enough problems and of course not all owners are honest, I've heard of one breeder, for example, who declared that a bitch they bred died from addisons disease and told the owner to say that if asked, when in fact the owner told others it was renal failure.
My advice to you is to keep researching and dont rush into anything. I wish you luck with Tia. Of course Tias breeder should be pointing you in the right direction regarding a stud that would be suitable to Tias lines.
All the best, Lorna

hellp lorna99, i agree with what you are saying the breeder of the bitch is the best to be talking to, if they are unavailable, then someone who has knowlage of the breed.
who would you say she talks too.
