Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Booking a puppy?

I would like to know what the correct procedure is for booking a puppy. Meaning, can you book a puppy at only one breeder or can you book at two or more. The reason I'm asking is I have booked a puppy at a breeder and I haven't seen them yet. (still too young) And now I have found another breeder whom has a female like I want. Should I book there as well, just in case the first one is not to my liking? I don't want to do anything to upset either of the breeders, or to end up ruining things for myself and not getting a puppy at all. Thanks in advance for any advise you can give. :-)

Hi guest, first of all why don't you sign up to the forum for free so that you can respond to replies.

Breeders vary and many will take a deposit on booking or when the pups are born. If you have paid a deposit to the first breeder you are unlikely to get it back under these circumstances. I don't take deposits, make a big point that the prospective puppy buyer has no responsibility to me until they walk out of my house with the pup and I encourage them to look at other litters and talk to other breeders. I do that because I'd much rather people changed their minds before they get the pup and it also leaves me free to terminate the arrangement if for some reason I come to think they won't give my pup the sort of home I want for it. But I would be a bit bit miffed if I discovered that someone had booked a pup from me and then from another breeder on a 'safety net' basis without letting me know. On the other side of the coin, I wouldn't allow someone to book a pup from me if they already had booked one from someone else, and would be cross if I later discovered that there was a prior booking.

So I think you have a number of possibilities.

You could forget about breeder 2's pups and stick with breeder 1. That way you won't annoy anyone but risk not being quite satisfied with your puppy as you've already given your heart to breeder 2's pup.

You've seen a puppy you like, so you could tell breeder No 1 that you no longer want their pup and intend to book a pup from breeder No 2. Before doing that, I'd speak to breeder 2 first, as some breeders might refuse you a pup if they discover that you had already booked a pup from someone else.

You could do nothing until you see breeder 1's pups. That way you may like their pups better than breeder 2's, in which case you have no problems. On the other hand if you like breeder 2's pup better, it might be booked by then and even if it isn't, breeder 2 may still refuse to sell you a puppy because you had a prior booking.

You could come clean with both breeders now, explain your dilemma and see what they say. That's probably what I'd do, although you risk annoying both. The one thing I wouldn't do is make a booking from breeder 2 without making the situation clear to both breeders. Apart from the moral aspect, breeders tend to know each other and chances are they'll get to hear anyway.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Thanks Sharon for the good advise. I didn't know that I could join the forum. I thought it was for breeders only. Thanks for that info as well. You have helped me more than you know. :-)

I never take any money from anyone that has booked a puppy with me until they have actually chosen their pup.If they want to pull out at anytime before that then that's fine with me.There is always someone else on the waiting list . So long as they do actually tell me and I don't have to go chasing round to find out what it is they want to do.Can't abide people that keep you hanging on while they decide whether they do or don't want a pup.

Thanks for your "welcome" Jackie. I think it will be fun to be on champdogs. I have learned a lot prior to joining, so I know it has helped me. It's nice to get others opinions. Just for the record, breeder number 1 did not take money for the booking. I contacted number 2 and told him I was seeing another litter and then I would get back to him. He was very apprecitive for me being honest. He agreed I should see as many litters as I could before I made up my mind. So.... I'm not in hot water with anyone. Whew!!!! This is my first time purchasing a dog. So breeders, etc. is all so new to me. I have always gotten a rescue dog. But I have always wanted a yorkie. So, I'm 48, two of my three sons are grown men now, so I'm finally getting the dog I always wanted!! Thanks again to all of you for your advise.

My experience is different, and perhaps it depends on the breed.

When I bred my first litter of only four, I kept one, one was booked by a lady who is now a good friend, and will be having a third puppy from me. I had two left to find homes for, and three people messed me about and let me down over these two puppies. I had lots of enquiries from other people, who I blithely passed on to other people who had pups, or maybe only expecting.

Since then I take a £50 deposit, if the people want to be certain of having a pup, that way I can pass on surplus enquiries, and if I am then let down have something to defray the added cost of re advertising, and waiting for new homes to become available.

My breed is numerically small, so the supply and demand for puppies is fairly balanced, and there is either feast or famine, sometimes pups have to wait for homes, as there is a surfeit of one sex say, and at other times people have to wait for a pup.

Hi Brainless , I agree with you and think all breeders should take deposits of course that is if they want to.

I know my freind recently had all her puppies booked and I think 2 or 3 purchasers actually never came through and let her down. luckily there are a few of us who keep in contact with people looking for nice puppies and it was all sorted out but it does worry me sometimes that puppy purchasing to some is not much more important than buying a new pair of shoes.

I think this is one reason I am personally slightly put off breeding.
