I've always left it to the bitch in question. They have all wanted to be part of the pack into going into actual labour ;-) Then they don't want anyone near them :-D I let them know where the whelping box is and have everything ready for her so it isn't a big surprise when she has to be alone.

i agree, my bitch stayed with the family until labour then i kept my other bitch away (from whelping room) untill she let her back in (pups prob week old) she still mixed with her when she came through house to the garden and was fine

With mine not until Labour is underway and they need to nest.  One of mien was not happy being away from the others when in labour so I left it until she was about to deliver first pup (expelling contractions seen) when I whisked her off to the whelping quarters.

Of course mine are in a totally domestic situation.

Depends on the bitch. One of mine would have NOTHING to do with the others from the day she was mated until the pups were 5 weeks old.

i have always let my bitch do as she likes and shes always wanted to stay with the others until shes just about to have pups .

Same here, together until she starts the early stages of labour.  One of my girls had pups early this morning and Lastar is now in the same room (of course under strong supervision), though he won't bother going anywhere near.  My dog is fine with this.

It does depend on the bitch though, she will tell you whether she wants them around or not.

Umm let's just say second smallest litter for the breed :)  Her daughter had 2 last year, he, he.  Oh well as they say quality over quantity and to be truthful I definitely agree with this philosophy.

i used to leave it to the bitch until i had a bad experience 2 litters ago where the bitch showed absolutely no signs of whelping and started to drop puppies in the garden amongst the adult hounds!!! Ever since that, i have kept them away from the mainpack for about the last week.

My previous breed (boxers) were never seperated until actual whelping then as soon as they had finished they wanted the pack back around them. I have yet to have a litter of Spins (hopefully this year if I can settle on stud dog), but would deffinatley be led by the bitch.
