hi you all probably know what happened to my prinnie, the dog that had a 20cm hole and  had to spend nine and a half weeks in a vets due to a reaction from the microchip which was a tracer chip made by bayer animal health. i have got her home now thank god , she is quiet but shes going to be ok now. i have since got a petition on the 10 downing street E petitions website under the health and nutriton pages, set up stating that the chips need to change to protect our pets from the damage they causing to them , the chips also need to be researched and rectified. the companies that make these are  also trying to get away with not telling you on the leaflets the good and bad of chips and problems they may cause, they only point out the plus side and dont give you any indiacation of any problems at all including what happens straight after the chip has been fitted. i have also been advised by my m/p to get as many to sign this petition as possible as this will help us to get whats right for our pets, along with the people that have had problems to form a group and put pressure on these big companies with the help of mr elliot morley who is our local m/p and defra,s cheif vet who he has been intouch with about prinnies situation to make them fully aware of what their product do to our pets and the harm they have caused to so many i have been told by a  sience lab this happens to 1 in a 1000 that get chipped this is 1 to many.we have to make the companies who sell the chips to vets correct the faults with them by researching their products and changing them to make them safer to use on our beloved pets, and save our pets from this horific sight and pain and suffering. please get intouch with me asap and help us stop our pets from being subject to this pain. we can only do this if we all stick together and support one another for our pets sake i would be greatful if you would sign the petition thanks for your support.

To be totally honest I have had all my dogs microchipped and never had a problem with the 7 dogs and 2 cats that I've had done...maybe it was 'operator error' Be intersting to see how many others have had problems?

I can understand your obvious distress Sarah.. I cannot imagine how I would feel if it happened to any of my dogs.. but no matter how we feel, it a rare thing.. and there are some animals, including humans, that do react badly to implants... whatever they are..

I have had all my adults chipped, and my last 4 litters,, without incindent..

Nothing in life is risk free; some people prefer tattooing to chipping although the latter is the only acceptable method for pet passporting.

Sorry to hear all the problems you have had.  I always tattoo but thats a preference on the breed I own. A friend of mine had an incident of the chip in her dogs travelling down the leg but apart from that I dont know of any other problems.  There is a risk with everything we do, maybe it is an isolated incident but all the same I do feel for the trauma you have both been thro.

Hi Sarah, I am really sorry to hear about the awful problems your dog has experienced after being microchipped.  Both my dogs are chipped and both seem to be ok with it, but as you have said, if it happens to 1 in every 1000 dogs that is one too many.  I am pleased that your dog is now ok.  Did they remeove the chip eventually?

I don't know very much about chips going wrong the  reason I chipped my dogs is probably like everyone else, so that they can be returned to us if they go missing.  But like anything we choose to keep our pets safe there is always a downside, just like with over vaccinating.

You might like to have a look at this website:  http://www.canine-health-concern.org.uk/  where there is info on microchipping and what can go wrong, it may also help with your campaign to get safer chips or other identification for our dogs.

I would be happy to sign your petition for more research and safer chipping, just point me in the right direction.

Unfortunately I doubt very much there is such a thing as a "safe" chip.  Whatever they are made of there will be a dog somewhere that will react to it although I suspect by far the more common cause of problems will be simply the inability to ensure a sterile skin surface and thus introducing bacteria at the time of insertion.  This has also happened when vaccinating. The skin is the organ that protects us from the outside world and breaking through it is always going to involve some risk.  When we take preventative measures for our dogs we just have to determine whether the benefits are going to justify that risk and for most people the benefits of these procedures will far outweight it.

Out of interest we have chipped no problems but I would like to tattoo the BC where would you gt that done, and what do you tattoo KC number?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 04.02.09 10:42 UTC
The National Tatto registry http://www.dog-register.co.uk/ tattoo with a unique series of letters and numbers that identify, where the dog was tattooed, by which tattoist and what series of breeds it is from, along with a number.

You can notify the KC of this number and it will be added to yoru dogs records.  If you are an on-line registering breeder you can amend the records of all dogs in yoru ownership with these details yourself, both chip and tattoo.

With litters of pups the tattooist comes to you, with individual dogs you go to them.  I have mine being doen next Wednesday.  Have all my litters done
