Topic Other Boards / Foo / Miele or Dyson?

Need a new vacuum cleaner.  Seems to be between Miele cat and dog or Dyson animal.

Opinions please.

miele cat and dog is great -couldn't be without it!
- By Goldmali Date 31.01.09 13:32 UTC
Neither -both of mine were only fit for the tip within 6 months and both companies told me if I had more than 2 or 3 pets I would be classified as commercial premises and therefore the guarantee was not valid. (Miele told me this first, so when I was about to buy an Animal, I asked Dyson before buying, and they said they would have the same condition. Foolishly I still bought one, believing it would not break -ha! Within a WEEK it needed its first repair.) The only vacuum I have ever had that lasted more than 6 months is the Henry and he is now several years old. :) I'd love a pink Henrietta but as Henry just keeps on going I probably will never get the chance LOL. I was recommended the Henry here on CD and I've never regretted getting one. Strong suction (MUCH stronger than the Dyson despite being lower wattage -I use it to pick up all the dogs' toys and bones with to save me from bending down!), doesn't break down, and cheap to buy too! :)

I've got a Dyson dc14 Animal and have 2 dogs, love it, great suction and pick up, worth the money

You could search for this thread, it's been done time and time again LOL.

Henry vote from me, they go on forever.

Very true, but .... 1) products can change 2) new members, of which there seem to be many, may have contributions, 3) it's not a topic that's likely to start a bun fight and lastly, I'm feeling lazy - lol :-)

Husband said Miele but I argued against it because it has bags.  Does anyone re-use the bags?
- By suejaw Date 31.01.09 14:35 UTC
We have a Dyson which is great but seems to be loosing suction at the moment and there are no blockages.. Also have 4 dogs and 2 cats in the house so sounds like any repairs and cover will be negated due to this.

I had the Dysin engineer out to fix my 5 year old machine which kept cutting out within a minute or so of being turned on. He replaced everything (new motor, new filter, new hoses etc) that might be the cause to save having to check all the various bits individually. The total cost? £60.

Hi Cheryl

I'd never recommend a Dyson - the original models seem to have been best whereas the last 5 years until now, myself and every one else I know well who has succumbed to the hype of the ugly, heavy, cumbersome plastic things have been severely disappointed.   They are also far too bulky to skim under furnishings/radiators just off floor height so with uprights require constant use of the tools - which is a pain on a daily basis.

I only use uprights so can't comment on the Henry but everyone I know that has them adores them for their suction and also reliability.

Apart from on here I know nowt of the Miele.

Personally having gone through several makes and models of uprights I would only ever buy / renew with an Electrolux.  IMO they are well priced, VERY reliable, remain powerful, built of lighter weight but sturdier build than many other brands and cope exceptionally well with multi surfaces covered in the hairs of multi dogs :)

HTH, Teri

I've had the new Dyson Animal ball for about a month now so can't report on longevity but I ADORE the design and ease of use.It has the power and reach of an upright but the ease of movement of a cylinder .I don't think I could ever go back  :) I had a Dyson cylinder years ago that was always needing bits replacing but this one came with a 5 year guarantee for parts and labour so was reasuring.

I have had my animal Dyson upright for 7 years in may, i have 3 small dogs and think its great!
- By NEWFIENOOK [gb] Date 31.01.09 16:25 UTC
vax everyday turbo works brill with my lot , hairs ,leaves and even bits of wood ( they all chew logs that are in the log basket) i have had a dyson before but kept blocking up . depends on how hairy your dogs are i suppose ?
- By suejaw Date 31.01.09 16:39 UTC
The vax sounds interesting. My boy has a coat very similar to the Newf. Also get leaves and chewed bits of wood all over the place, so this sounds interesting.
I do personally think this year ours will need replacing to something which has better suction, though don't like bags.
- By arched [gb] Date 31.01.09 16:44 UTC
I have re-used the Miele bags but not often as I've never needed to really. Again a personal thing - when Dysons came out and all my friends had them I hated the bagless idea, and I still do. My Mum's machine is bagless and I can't be bothered with it. I like the total no mess approach and I don't really want to see all my dust and bits swirling about !.

Thank you all very much :-)

Did you have some sort of extended warranty JG? I've got a dead DC04 that I love to have repaired but haven't got round to it!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 01.02.09 08:32 UTC
No; in fact the very nice people on the helpline said it was a shame that my machine was out of warranty otherwise it would all have been done for nothing.
- By Tigger2 Date 01.02.09 17:29 UTC
Brilliant, thank you :-) I was going to take mine to the local 'all sorts' repair shop but will phone dyson instead then :-)
- By Ailsa [gb] Date 01.02.09 18:34 UTC
suejaw - we had this problem with our Dyson but after reading a previous post on this board we took out the thick foam filter and washed it. It takes a couple of days to dry properly but it now works fine.

Whilst the Dyson was not working very well we bought a Henry which is fab. Now use both, after managing to fix the Dyson.

We have a Dyson, though we won't be getting another one!! i personally don't rate them. :-)
- By suejaw Date 01.02.09 21:00 UTC
Ailsa,

Guess what we did just that last night and need to put the filter back in. It started off black and after washing realised it's a great shade of bright blue.. Lol..

Believe the suction should be back to normal now, also removed all the hair from the brush.. Now that is annoying.. Anyone do well with an upright without a brush on the bottom?? Berner fur gets clogged up in this.
- By tadog [gb] Date 01.02.09 21:08 UTC
I have a Dyson animal. when I bought it about four or five years ago I took out a insurance with it, I dont remember how much it was but i would not have taken it if it were too dear. it was for wear & repair.  I had never used it. then in January the hose went. so i phoned up i got a new hose so i asked if I could have the part that collects all the dirt. got a new one and alo o a new brush thingy.  so my insurance has paid for itself and its still usable for another few years.
- By Whistler [gb] Date 02.02.09 13:34 UTC
Im a dyson fan I have had one with both my dogs for about 3 years (same model).
- By AliceC Date 02.02.09 13:45 UTC
Our Dyson animal is still going strong and picks up really well - and when it did break we got great customer service and it was repaired straight away.
- By arched [gb] Date 02.02.09 13:57 UTC
All very well Dyson being good at repairs...........but wouldn't it be better if they were more reliable in the first place ;) :)
- By AliceC Date 02.02.09 13:58 UTC
Yes very true...but would've been more annoyed if they had charged me loads for the repair or kept me waiting for ages. It hasn't broken since and that was at least a year ago...(touches wood furiously) ;-)
- By ginastarr [ie] Date 02.02.09 14:51 UTC
i got a dyson animal in  october , and with 3 tibetan terriers all in full coat and 1 pom x jrt who moults , it is brilliant , no complaints about it .
- By no-middle-name [gb] Date 02.02.09 21:23 UTC
Dyson every time for me, ive never looked back since having one :-)
- By saintb09 [ie] Date 02.02.09 21:38 UTC
You should have a look at a Bosch, they have a new "professional" model which recently won which best buy, it's got a 10 year motor guarantee.
