I very much doubt your Cavalier was trying to "maul"your son. Cavaliers are like other spaniels & have a soft mouth & I haven't come across any 14 week old puppy that actively tried to maul anyone regardless of the puppies breed.

As for the mounting-yes it is very normal & I would remove your  puppy as soon as he starts, thus stopping the behaviour & say nothing.

Have you done any obedience training with him yet ?  I would put him in his bed(the dog that is)whilst your son is in the bath & getting out & going to bed-prevention is far better than cure & I would teach him a go to bed command, so he does not see it as a punishment

i have a four and a half month cocker and he has took a fancy to a "clinton" teddy that sits up on my bed.  He has done it (humped i mean) since  9 wks i couldnt believe it the first time i saw him.  my teenage boys were in hysterics lol.  He has loads of cuddly toys and his own toys but its just that one he just has to catch a glimpse of it and hes away.  Now he can jump on my bed the poor teddy has no life lol. My last dog (cocker too) did it but not at this early age so il be curious as to what other posters have to say.

I do have to laugh at this post. We have a 11 week old pup who has taken to humping my Berner's head. It is hilarious and my Berner continues chewing his toy throughout.. Shouldn't really laugh but the sight is comical the first few times you see it.
Though after getting it on film he does now get knocked off by myself and told no. The chances of it progressing to adulthood could possible be quite high if allowed to continue.

I like others would either give a command, if not then removing him saying nothing and putting him to bed, he'll soon get the msg.

As for biting, its normal puppy behaviour. Our pup has taken to following you and if you have loose trousers on he will hold onto them for dear life as you try to walk away..
Gotta love pups and training them..

Shouldn't laugh?  Sorry, but I could just picture it, and imagined your boy continuing with his chewing, I couldn't help laughing out loud! :-)

Haha, I know its undesirable behaviour, but it IS funny. :)

Nellie - my 18 month old terrier bitch, who was spayed two months ago - has taken to frantically humping my husbands leg whenever he lays on the floor.  We do stop her, but usually my husband is so helpless with laughter at the expression on her little face that I have to join in.  We call her "Humphrey".

I have no idea why she does it, but I doubt its sexual.  I read that some dogs do it just because they can, and they like it!

Its self rewarding I suppose.  Going back to the OP, I would definitely discourage it in your puppy, but don't lose any sleep over it - loads of dogs do it, with very little rhyme or reason!!  There is a school of thought that it is a way of exerting dominance over a pack leader or pack subordinate, as it is sometimes seen as non-sexual behaviour between dogs of the same sex, or a female mounting a male, etc etc.  But then, the whole dominance theory is open to question isn't it.......

Thank you everyone this has put my mind at rest that its just not my dog! it is funny but I have only had my dog for 2 weeks so training is starting now as not sure I want him mounting everyone in sight!!!  When I said mauling that is a bit harsh actually just jumping about and licking etc my son so no it wasnt actually mauling my son! My dog seems to have calmed down a bit now as I put him in the cage each time he tries it which has decreased in number now!!     Thank you.
