I was wondering if any one else has used this for their dogs and how good you find it also i am going to try hydrotherapy which has been recomended by my vet

I've used metacam with several dogs and never had any problems with it. My borzoi boy is forever spraining or pulling muscles and a weeks course of metacam usually sorts that out. Littlest collie has arthritis in her pasterns and is on a minimal maintenance dose of metacam every day. If I forget to give her her dose then she is lame so it's definitely working.

As with any of the anti-inflammatories there are possible side effects and it doesn't suit every dog. Personally it seems to suit my dogs better than rimadyl but I am constantly on the look out for signs of stomach upsets etc.

Our GR is on it at the moment for something that is making her lame has worked really well.  All we have to do now is find out what's causing the problems (£650 worth of xrays and examinations found nothing).

Just not nice seeing her so lame ,,,,,the cold weather does not help

Hi Emma,  we had a GR several years ago and when he was 11 years old he starting getting arthritis and was very stiff and often limped.  The Vet put him on Metacam and it helped him no end, bless him.  He ended up taking this for 2 years and i feel it certainly helped to keep him more supple in the last years of his life.  He lived to nearly 14 years old and died of a stroke.  We still miss him now, he was such a gentle, lovely boy. x

An update

She has been on it since thursday and still no diffirence and she is limping like mad!!

So ringing the vets tomorrow

Would of thought by now it should of started working

Did call the vets sunday and they daid to wait till monday to see if it takes effect

I dont know if this helps but my girl was on a painkiller called zubrin,although I cant tell you whats in it,only that I asked for that drug as it is advertised as being kind to the liver and kidneys,and we needed to use it long term,about a year in the end,where it then stopped working,and we switched to steroids(this is for rheumatoid arthritis) we have used metacam as well very effective,but like people,im sure some things work better than others,if it still isn't working try something else?there seem to be a lot of painkillersto choose from.

UPDATE
Went to the vets to day and saw a different vet
Now looking at cruciate ligament damage or worse casw bone cancer

I no the vet has to tell you the worse but so devasted

Booked in for x rays on wednesday so hopefully it wont be the bone cancer, wont no what to do then

They advised to continue the metacam but still not helping

so sorry to hear that.  fingers crossed. C.R. isnt nice, but my girl had repair and goes out working picking up now and only needs Metacam if she has had a busy time. Good luck.

The wait untill the xray results is going to feel like torture for you :( My dog was diagnosed with Elbow Displasia as a pup, at first we were sent home with Metacam after taking him to the vets with a limp. The Metacam didn't appear to be helping so he had xrays wich showed up the ED. With exercise and weight management he has avoided an opperation and no longer needs Metacam apart from occasionally if he shows a limp he'll have Metacam for a few days.
I know it's so easy to focus on the worst, I hope you have good news on Wed.

Its the ligement damage which has ben detected on the x rays

Which is great news compared to bone cancer though its going to be a slow proccess

One of my girls was on Metacam after an op, she reacted to it by not eating for 5 days, in the end the vet took her off it and within a couple of days she was back to normal.

My Westie has been on Metacam for over a year now as she has quite severe arthritis.  She does very well on it and although she doesn't put much weight on her poorly back leg she still races around the fields given half a chance.  The vet took her off it when she had a bad tummy upset in November and then her back legs seized right up - so she was put back on it.

I think it is good stuff,  better than rimadyl.

I know sometimes metacam is necessary but I also think painkillers can have the reverse effect. If a dog is in pain with one of his/her limbs then he/ she will naturally be more careful on that leg.  However, once you introduce the painkiller, then the dog will not be quite so careful and could cause more damage. 

These are not just painkillers though, they are anti-inflammatorys so they are also a treatment and can prevent further damage to a joint, for instance, resulting from the swelling.

My big ty is going in for x-ray in the morn, unsure what is causing his lameness, im hoping its nothing sinister.

Hi Tracy thanks for your message, I hope your news is ok

She is no longer on the metacam , she is having weekly injections for the ligement which is hopefully to help with healing process

I have also taken the Decision  to stop the metacam and use rymidal , though in the uk they dont usually use the injection and rymidal  together , I have discussed this with the vet and she has discussed it with tow other vets one be from oz and they use the two toether there
the rymidal  will be used on a as a when needed basis the metacam is touching her at all.
I understand the complication this could cause in the long run but 1 : its not for long term use and the 2 things she could get are very unlikely

I am arranging the swimming tomorrow though the insurance does not cover this

I also have to say my vet has been wonderfull

Thats good news hun, and im sure your vet will keep checks on her, Im a physical therapist(sports &Remidial) so if its that with tyler or muscular, then i will be able to do work with him, .
Metacam has worked for my other dogs in the past but it did give them loose stools. hope all go,s well hun. keep me informed to how she gets on, my e-mail add is on here. all the very best.xx

Yeah will do, the worse thing for her is she cant get out and she causes mayhem when i take the other three out

And i think she nos she cant run round and is whinning ( not in pain) bt its what she does usually

Yes I know that, and in some cases are necessary but sometimes they can be prescribed too quickly causing more problems than helping.
