Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / can i change my dogs sleeping and toilet area arrangements??

I have a 2 1/2 yr old cavailer king charles and she was house trained from very young and always slept in a crate in the utility room with no problem. She is never left on her own for very long and with me being at home all day she follows me every where, even when i go and have a bath she either lays outside the bathroom door or lays on the bath mat waiting for me. It's silly but last year when i went into hospital on my return she was whining to get to me and as i was in bed after my operation my husband let her up and there she stayed right next to me ! Needless to say that's where she has slept since.  From when we got her as a 10 week old pup she has always done her toilet business either on our grass or out on walks. My problem now is that we have since just got a new cavvie and she is now 16 weeks, we decided that we were getting a "puppy gate" to put down the side of our house so there was no easy access to the garden. The pup now does her business down the side and her sleeping arrangements are sleeping in a crate in the utility room, she is doing really well and maybe at most wakes me once on the rare occasion twice to go out for a wee or poo in the night. I have been trying to get my 2 1/2 yr old to do her toilet business in this paved area down the side of the house so it is easily cleaned and not on the grass when the children go out but she is having non of it, and seems to wait to go out for a walk, i know it is totally my fault.  Also they are getting on great and curl up together i hopedthat once the pup is house trained i was going to see if my 2 1/2 yr old cavvie would sleep the night in their basket in the utility with the pup. do you think she'll have non of it, should i not change her routine as she may feel it's the pups fault, or should i have great patience ?

I wish you luck with getting a dog used to going on grass to go on paving stones, I had a friend who once moved house and her 5 year old dog just would not go on paving stones he would hold himself and even prefered to go in the house rather than on the paving, in the end worried that he was causing internal problems from holding himself so much they made a border with wood chip and the dog would go outside again with no problems, so you may well be asking too much re: that problem.

But you could give it a go, (you can always try :-) )  you could collect some of her toileting and place it in a corner of the paving stones (leave it there for a couple of days) let her go and sniff it to get used to her scent being there and you may get lucky and she may start to use it, just do your best to get her toileting scent on the paving stones.

Settling your girl into a different sleeping area though will be much, much easier, she may well adjust problem free, I would place some of your clothing, nighty, used bedsheet into her basket so that she still has your scent, she will also have your new pup for company and see if she settles.  If not you will have to ignore her cries as you would a new pup.  Eventually she will settle but you'll need to be consistant, settle her into her sleeping area with a good girl so that she knows it is not a punishment, perhaps a treat as well and don't over fuss her.

thank you i would never of thought about getting her own toileting scent in the area i want her to now go in. I did initially think that because she got the scent of the pup doing it then that might give her the go ahead as to "oh hey so i can do it here i am allowed". i will certainly try anything so her own scent is great advice thanks. With regards the sleeping you have made me feel easier about that too, as least she has the pup for company now and not on her own. The room they will be in of a night is the room that she goes in to without a problem in the day if i say to her "go into your bed" when she knows i am going out for a while so it's not a strange place for her. I live in hope. thanks, i fully understand that i should of done the same from day one with the toileting on the paving rather than the grass as now she might just see it as now we have the pup everything is being changed
