Topic Dog Boards / General / dog brush for setter

I think the brush we have for Khan is a bit too small and wondered what you would recommend for a 7mth setter. I spent 25mins brushing him today (albeit half of that time was spent playing and discouraging Khan from eating the brush!) and he really doesn't look like he's been coiffered at alll!
We have a double headed round brush which has bristles on one side and metal (I think) prongs on the other. It's also one that you can make the spikes retreat to remove hair easily, I like that bit. Would you recommend a larger brush or any particular make. I'm wondering whether a larger brush or one with longer teeth would have more effect.
Also do setters moult much as not a lot of fur comes out even if he hasn't been brushed for a few days.
All advice greatly appreciated.

if he came in to my salon i would use a slicker brush on him but if u are showing him then maybe a really good pin brush and a metal comb would be the best to use

for you gordon, i use a pin brush, comb and a nylon bristle brush (denman). As a puppy and until the puppy boat has gone, i find the nylon brush and comb do well and once the adult boat is through k use the pin brush for knots and the nylon for drying after a bath and for finishing before going in the ring.

It really depends on how much boat your dog has, as i've found a slicker doesn't get far enough into my boys coat and tends to pull out more coat.

Hi :)

Agree with the brush recommendations and your pup probably has a lovely puppy coat which is all sticking out in all directions :)

At 7mth not alot will come out and in general they don't lose too much fur really - it will come out when its ready to come out.

So at 7mth I wouldn't expect much if any to come out really and you are right it probably looks like you haven't bothered LOL  But keep it up as its good for Khan to get used to it and the playtime will become less I'm sure :)

Not a great fan of slicker brushes and nor are my dogs but I know alot of groomers use them on setters.

Hope this helps,

Rachel

only really use slicker brushes because its the best all round brush to use on every coat

I have Irish Setters, and I use several different types of brush for different things.

I use one with a mixture of nylon and pure bristle for getting through the long feathering. A pure bristle one for getting a nice shine on the top coat, and a medium tooth comb for finishing. I'd really advise a grooming spray too, it helps to keep hair breakage to a minimum and helps protect the hair from dirt and grime, and an anti static spray just sprayed onto the brush to keep static under control.

I never used to use a slicker on Irish Setters, but my other breed is the American Cocker, and I have soft slickers for them. I tried one on my old Irish when he got covered in those little green sticky bud seed things one summer and found it amazing, so yes I like to keep a soft slicker handy.

As your boy gets older, you'll find he gets a bit sticky where urine spashes onto his feathering, so it's best to get into a routine of keeping his undercarriage clean as the urine weakens the hair too.

Dawn, what grooming spray do you use? I often see people at shows using different sprays, I wouldnt mind some sort of shine spray. I only use the non rinse shampoo at shows for his under carriage and ive also got some sea breeze oil (I think its called) to protect his hair underneath but to be honest I wash him off so much (he pees all over his legs and belly !!) that I dont think the oil lasts long anyway.

Hi Claire, I use Chris Christensen Ice on Ice grooming spray, it gives a lovely feel to the coat but I've also used Laser Lites Show spray which is something else I have for the Yankees. The Ice on Ice doesn't have any fragrance but the Laser Lites smells lovely.

I'm going to seek out the Plush Puppy stand at Crufts, I fancied trying the Sea Breeze oil.

Thanx for all your replies.
Could someone explain what a 'slicker' is please, is that the one I have already?
We aren't planning on going into the show scene with Khan although maybe a few family friendlies later on in the summer might be fun! So, even though we want him to look and feel his best we won't preening, spraying or any of those other 'fur'dressing techniques as I find it hard enough when I have my own 'bad hair day' !
And nursey, as for ~

Weeell... she did find Khan for us as she never bred this year and hubby was desparate for a setter pup!
She did say about having a metal brush when we got him but I left all the doggy stuff to my husband as 'Khan was going to be his dog blah blah .........' but it seems Khan is a lot calmer when I brush him, at greeting me........!
