My neighbour at the farm asked me today to look at their ECS and say if I think she is in pup. "When did you mate her?" I asked. August she says. I pointed out that she should have had them by now, but she assured me the vet said they would come about Christmas time, so I obviously know nothing!!!!
Then her husband comes in & tells her she is wrong & the bitch was mated in October (whats a month or two matter?!). I pointed out that she should have taken note of the exact day, but then it turns out that they had left the bitch at a friends when they went on holiday: friend owns a "nice" ECS dog and no-one had actually seen the mating, they were just hoping it had happend during the fortnight they were away!!!
I started to tell them about the great lengths I was currently going to with my forthcoming litter. How I had spent God knows how long studying breeding lines & finding the right dog. Paid a £600 stud fee, had her scanned, planning my whole life around the due date, buying new vet beds for the pups, getting in spare heat lamp bulbs, Lactol & so on etc.
They looked at me like I was quite potty: apparently they expect their bitch to produce puppies without any comlpications, in the hay barn, rear them soley on her own, not need the vet to attend, not need tails or dewclaws doing and to sell at 8 weeks for £400 each without any come backs or resposibility on their part. The infuriating thing is that they will probably get away with it & I will be the one with the vet fees and awkward puppy buyers!!!!!

Odd thing, this happens with people too :( A really nice healthy responsible couple can't get pregnant with just one child, no matter what. Whereas the rude hateful neighbors who don't really care about the children they have --- dirty, messy, running all over the place, not getting educated, or eating right, etc... --- can easily repopulate the earth :rolleyes:

I found out last week that an ex friends Gsd has just produced 8 healthy pups from an 'accidental' mating. the bitch is roughly 18 mths old and the sire younger and I'm sure it was no accident as she tried unsuccessfully to mate her previous bitch with her older GSD male. I don't know what makes me angrier, the fact that the 'unsuccessful' bitch is no longer on the scene, probably rehomed or worse, the fact that this person has no income so if there had been any problems it would have fell on the PDSA's door, or most sickeningly that the pups will be ready just around xmas and she'll be only too happy to let them go as they'll be an inconvenience by then.
When's your litter due? lol not you personally but you know what i mean! :D

Poor Sam - your friends already think you're either potty or a wind-up artist because of your plans for Caper, but I reckon even they'd see the difference between August and October as significant :-).

people like this makes me sick, i spent a fortune on cleo and her pups. i didnt sleep for 6 days at all, and even when i did go to bed on day 7 i was worrying too much to sleep, the first nights sleep was on the 21st ish day. Then the pups kept me awake playing in the shed and then they woke at 6am(bless them).

these money making people do not deserve to own a pet, and i hop the bitch is not pregnant :)

Ohyes, the other bit that annoyed me is that neither of these two spaniels have had any sort of health test and they didn't even ask about the pedigree so they could be litter brother & sister for all they know....they both bought them during the same month, 3 years ago!!!

I feel sorry for the dog's :( its such a shame some treat their dogs like this? Put it this way if I ever wanted a pup I would come to you for advise and what I need to know and do I don't think I would be happy getting a pup like those neighours of yours are going to do? poor doggie

ahh, yes,julieanne: but the best of it is that they would probably sell the pups as superior to mine (if I had ecs) because they are "pet" dogs & not inbred show dogs!!!!!! That is the mentality of the general public for you!!!!!

just wanted to say that i am "general public" and i certainly wouldnt buy a pet from anyone that couldnt give me kc registration , parents health records and a full pedigree.Secondly id check the home~im sure they will appear what they are~frauds.

Sadly though most people see price as proof they are buying a good dog.If you are not on the dog scene but want a healthy happy pup they tend to check the "loot" ( makes me shudder) and find the most expensive.

My neighbours CERTAINLY ARE NOT FRAUDS and I didn't mean to imply that at all. They are simply ignorant to the correct (in my opinionanyway) way of breeding and the ethical reasons for breeding a litter. They actually have bred some of the top holstein cattle in the south west, but have no idea about dogs!

i didnt mean to sound nasty , i was just meaning that im sure that a responsable new owner would value buying from a respectable breeder who would offer advice and maybe not some one who wasnt even sure when the dog was due

Sometimes, despite all of the best intentions, it's difficult for someone to determine who is a 'responsible and ethical' breeder. :( Unfortunately, people don't have brands on their foreheads to make it easier ;) :) And then there's all of the contradictory advise that individuals get from friends and family to muddle the whole situation :rolleyes: Look on here and see how many opinions abound. Then there's books/magazines etc.... Information overload is quite likely. :P

It's rough. I don't look forward to ever going puppy hunting due to all of the hazards out there + the high cost of purchase in an unknown factor.
My hat's off to those who can :) :D :) But I think I'll stick along the lines of rehoming or having animals find me in times of need :) That seems to be my pattern on every single dog I've had as an adult :rolleyes: :)

I know what you mean Zoe. However, thanks to the anti dogs (pedigree) brigade there seems to be a real negative attitude to someone who shows pedigree dogs and breeds (they must surely all be inbred genetic freaks???) occassional litters & certain factions are promoting "pet bred" puppies from pet homes, in the grave misbelief that they must be healthier!!! Total nonsense I know....but its happening and the public are easily brainwashed into believing it (not you of course!)

Thats not to say though that some "pet" owners are not good breeders , some take proper responsibility in researching before breeding im sure......they must right?? i know i would if ever i were to enter into it.God knows what awfull abnormalities one could introduce to the breed with the wrong matings.........(just gotta look at a few of my neighbours to know that !)
