Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 35 days pregnant, with watery bloody discharge?!
- By teambernese [gb] Date 28.01.09 17:18 UTC
Hi all,

My Berner bitch is 35 days pregnant today. This is my first litter, I have help from a Cocker breeder but she is away until the weekend so I am looking for advice! My bitch was running and jumping around today in the garden, came back in and bled about 10 drops of watery red discharge.

She seems completely fine now, no bleeding, she's stretched out by the fire, has eaten her tea and is her usual self.

I have just been on the phone to her vet who didn't think it was an emergency and said I didn't need to bring her in tonight, but he has made her an appointment for tomorrow morning so he can check her.

However I just can't stop worrying! Is this something to worry about? Should I get a second opinion or stop worrying and wait until morning? Has anyone else experienced this before and what happened?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I think any type of bloody coloured discharge is something that would worry me. Clear strings can be normal but any blood or brown coloured discharge and I would be at the vets pronto. Just my opinion but I always like to be safe rather than sorry.

Im sure that there are alot more experienced people on here that will have their own opinion. Good luck. I hope that everything is ok.

I would like to add that she has just been out for her walk and tried to go the toilet 5 times, but only actually urinated twice. There was blood again, so I am now really worried that she may have an infection.

I just rang the emergency vet who really frustrated me, he seemed to think I was over reacting and told me to calm down and wait until her morning appointment as emergency is for road traffic accidents etc.!

I really don't know what to do, am I being paranoid? I am thinking of calling another vet and seeing if anyone else will see her :(

I would change my vet wouldn't put up with that my vet would have said come down after all your paying and it not cheap so you would not phone them unless you are really worried I would insist they saw her

Hello

It really is difficult to say without seeing the bitch. Some bitches show a slight discharge for upto 45 days post mating many others dry up immediately post mating. If she is quite happy in herself and I assume from your posting that she is,then there is no need to call out a vet at this stage re the bitch heself. However, discharge at this stage of pregnancy can be quite normal in some bitches but could be a sign of post mating infection  or even possible re absorbtion in other bitches. It would be advisable to take her to a vet in the morning and firstly ask him to check the bitch and then secondly check for pregnancy. If there is infection and possible signs all is not well it is usually easily treatable at this stage.

My bitch is 54 days pregnant, and she had something similar happen, she is fine though. Good Luck with the puppies.  I am counting the hours till 6th Feb!!!

Yes, although my dog wasn't pregnant, it sounds similar to her when she had a water infection. I syringe fed her water to make sure she was getting lots until her vet appointment the next day.
Then again it could be something to do with her pregnancy.
Hope all goes well for her tomorrow. x

a drop of milk in her water will encourage her to empty her bowl .
I would be annoyed with the vet because if it is a water infection she will be feeling uncomfortable remember to inform the vet she is pregnant if they give you medication.

But surely a bloody discharge is not good!!

INo, but without examining the bitch it's impoosible to say where the discharge is coming from. It might be merely coincidental that the bitch is pregnant - cystitis (which can result in the leakage of bloody urine) can happen to any dog at any time.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for your help and advice! My girl went to see her usual vet this morning who was very good with her, I took an urine sample with me and he confirmed it was a UTI. She's on a course of Amoxi and is going back in 10 days to see how it's clearing up. Besides for that she and pups are doing fine! :)
