You have a stunning puppy, pure show potential, at home.  And you are just starting to train the pup to be the next big show dog.  You envision winning breeds, groups, and the best in shows.  You picture yourself at the leading dog shows (whether it be Crufts, Westminster, Show of Shows, etc)

How do you get your pup there?  What do you do, to turn your pup into the next big thing?

My Tips:

My breed is a table breed, so also have to focus on the table

- when table training, do the training times with meal times.  I usually put my dog on the table for breakfast and dinner times, and stack my dog, and give their kibbles as the "bait".  So not only are they getting their meals (which they want) but they are also getting training time.  Eventually increase the time they need to be stacked for before giving the treat (ie start giving the treat immediately when feet are in place, and then build up to 10 seconds or longer before giving the treat)
- Pet stores!!!  They have lovely aisles, and lots of distractions for your dog.  Walk up and down the aisles to work on movement.
- Handling classes
- use a mirror.  Not to check how you look (can work on that later of course) but to see how the judge is going to be seeing your dog.

Any more tips????

The biggest one as far as I'm concerned.  Make it fun for the dog!  If he/she doesn't enjoy it, you're not going to get very far!

Puppies (infact right though to veterans) get playtime during training and LOTS of it.  Where the dog learns to show is also a place the dog learns to love and play.  When I work my dogs at ringcraft we are lucky in a way that we, as a family, run it so not everybody has to work at the same time.  At the start, tea break, and end I will take the dogs up and do a little work, I will then play with them, letting the lead go and having plenty of fuss and treats to give them.  the small dogs (help train parsons) get encouraged to jump up and have a cuddle, something they all love.

the other thing its LOTS of one to one time, espeicially when you have afew.

I never let the sparkle go out of a pup and I teach the dog to have a flashy posture on the move, in setters this is becoming the big thing and the better they hold themselves the more they catch the judges eye.

Besides Ringcraft training - not too much! that pup has brains and will learn quickly - Keep it FUN ;)

Feed the pup well on food that suits him and exercise him carefully, not too much at first but increasing the amount as he grows.  Mix lead walking with running about and exploring time.  There should be a good balance of muscle and bone in a well made pup.  A well made dog, at optimum fitness will move beautifully in the ring and outside of it and having been fed on a good diet will have a beautiful coat and sparkle that catches the eye.
