My dobermann is nearly 5 (well actually next month)  on Sunday we were watching television and he had a little wonder around and then he went to lift his leg up my sofa - I just caught him out of the side of my eye and screamed "no!!!" to which he stopped (after some had trickled out) and then I let him into the garden - hasn't happened since - but totally out of character!!!!

The one and only time my male did that was when I had a bitch in season in the house  :-D Funnily enough he was about 5 years old too ;-)

I put it down to the fact that at that age they are at their prime, so to speak, so want to prove thermselves to other pack members (you :-) ) Chance has never done it since so got the message :-D

I am hoping it is a one-off, it was as though he was shocked he had done it himself...................

The fact you caught him in the act and made your displeasure known is likely to forestall any recurrence.

Hi,
Make sure you get ride of the smell, or he may go back when you are not looking lol.

I think my boy did that tonight, there were a few suspicious drops by the dining room. My girl is in season, and usually Henry is very good and doesn't do it, but Madam deliberately squatted and did a huge wee on the carpet tonight (we were NOT impressed) so I can't blame him for marking. I cleaned as best as I could where she (and now he!) went but must pick up some proper stuff for cleaning it off.

hi, my dog done the same thing this afternoon, i took my other two for a walk & left oscar in the kitchen (we have a stair gate) he was a bit annoyed that he wasnt coming & barked as we were leaving, came back he'd knocked the stairgate over & got out, had an explore upstairs & pee'd on my bed, not impressed! He's done this before but a good while back, not sure if he's going through the KEVIN stage as he's only a year old, not sure how to deal with it, couldnt tell him off as he had already done it while we were out.

My boys cocks his leg on my fridgefreezer he is now 3 years old. We have tried lots of things but just cant stop him. It happens when we are out and over night but not every night or every time we go out. I have also got 2 bitches but both are spay and he has never met a bitch in season.

actually its very strange, my 22 month old has never done anything like that and is normally very clean however right in front of me 2 or 3 days ago she just weed on the floor. i was shocked but yelled to stop and put her and the rest of the dogs in the garden. she had previuosly been play fighting (her getting angrier by the mi as she tolerated the boy until she wants to stop playing) so i was wondering do you think this may have been marking? its very odd and so unusual for her to do it.

My entire BMD has and does seem to favour my husbands winter coat to pee up!
It is funny, but also annoying, but it only seems to be my husband's coat and this is when my OH leaves his coat hanging on the back of a chair, he has never done it to my coat! lol

The only thing that worked with my BSD was castration..
- By Brainless [gb] Date 09.02.09 07:23 UTC
One of the worst culprits I know was castrated, so much so I refused to have him to stay.

It can make things worse as for some it is a confidence booster to have their scent everywhere.  It is also a training issues an I would confine the culprit If I was unable to strictly supervise, and at other times tell them off if they even so much as looked like trying it.  they have to learn that it is unacceptable like any other behaviour you train them not to do.

Of course the scent needs to be removed from the prefered marking spots and access to these limited.

I had been having problems with my BSD scent marking in the house for a long time and had tried all the usual methods to stop him.At the time I was doing grooming at my house and my clients had to come in through the hallway so obviously he was feeling very insecure and unhappy with the presence of so many dogs so I couldn't totally blame him.The problem was he would never do it while I was around(although sometimes it would be when I nipped upstairs) and as it was such small amounts I quite often wasn't aware of what he had done immediately. He was peeing mainly in the kitchen but also up often on furniture.I crated him when I went out and he never did it in there. He was also being shown at the time-quite successfully and was owned in partnership so it was a very difficult decision to make but at the end of the day he is a pet,the showing wasn't important and my house was being ruined and I certainly didn't want to carry on crating him whenever I went out. After the castration it took a couple of weeks before there were improvements and after about a month he was 99% cured.I then moved house and he hasn't done it in the new house at all.So the castration definately worked-but there were negatives. He had never carried a big coat but what he had of a mane vanished and obviously his trousers and feathering on his legs grew long and has to be trimmed from time to time.So he has lost his male characteristics which are normally so pronounced in a BSD.
Other dogs also seem to treat him differently and he does seem to get attacked more often(which of course just adds to his insecurity) and although castration seems to be recommended to reduce aggression I just can't see it myself if my dog is anything to go by.
I wish I hadn't had to have him done and would certainly never have another dog castrated unless it was for very good health reasons(or severe problems like I had-I really had no other option unfortunately).
